1. عروسُ الكأْس يجلوها نديمي

    علينا في ثيابٍ من نعيم

    The bride of the cup, my companions adorn her

    In robes of bliss over us

  2. أَدِرْها واحْيِ أَباحاً تراها

    رَميماً بين أَجداث الهموم

    Pass her around, and give life to pleasures you see

    A cure between hardships and worries

  3. وداوِ بها جِراحات الليالي

    فلستَ على التّداوي بالمَلوم

    Heal with her the wounds of the nights

    You are not to be blamed for healing

  4. ولا تكسِر حُمَيّاها بمَزْجٍ

    فتضعُفَ عن مُقاومة الغريم

    Do not break her seal with a mix

    Lest she weakens against resisting the foe

  5. وأَعجَبُ كيف تبرُز وهي شمسٌ

    مكلَّلةَ الجوانب بالنّجوم

    I wonder how she appears a sun

    Crowned on all sides with stars

  6. إِذا طافت همومُك حولَ كأْسٍ

    ترامتْ نحوها شُهْبُ الرُّجوم

    When your worries circle a cup

    Missiles of aspirations hurl themselves toward it

  7. وقد زَفّ الربيع إِليك رَوْضاً

    قشيبَ الزَّهْر مُعْتَلَّ النسيم

    Spring has marched to you a garden

    Whose flowers are withered by the breeze

  8. فَحُثَّ اليَعْمَلات إِلى دمشقٍ

    سقاها اللهُ هَطّال الغيوم

    Urge the caravans toward Damascus

    May God water it with pouring clouds

  9. فيا لله درُّكِ من ديارٍ

    تَراضَعنا بها حَلَب الكروم

    Oh, your abode, what a wonderful home

    We were nurtured in it by grapevines

  10. فما رقأَتْ دموعي حين غابت

    جواسقُها ولا اندملت كُلومي

    My tears did not dry as it faded

    Nor my yearning subside

  11. إِذا ما طُفت حول دروب مقرى

    فعرِّج بي إِلى دَيْر الحكيم

    When I roam its paths

    Stop by the monastery of the wise

  12. وبادرْ نحو رَبْوتِها ففيها

    إِذا واجهتها بُرْءُ السقيم

    And head for its heights where

    The cured find relief when they face it

  13. وحيِّ النّيْرَبين فكم مضى لي

    على الشرفَيْن من شجنٍ قديم

    And inspire the two minarets, for how much

    Old passion have I had for the two honorable ones

  14. إِذا الخُطباء في الأَغصان قامت

    تهُزُّ النائمين عن النعيم

    When the orators on the branches stand

    Shaking those asleep from their bliss

  15. إِذا كأْس الصَّبا دارت سُحَيْراً

    تحُلُّ معاقد الدُرّ النظيم

    When the cup of morning circles around drunk

    Releasing the knots of organized pearls

  16. لقد أَهدت لها الخضراء بُرْداً

    بديع النَّسج مختلف الرُّقوم

    Verdant it was, I gave it a cloak

    Of exquisite weaving and varied embroidery

  17. وفي تلِّ الثعالب راح عنها

    ففيها منشإي وبها تميمي

    On the hill of foxes, I left it

    For it is my place of origin and my keepsake

  18. لقد حلّت جِنانُ الخُلد فيها

    وفي حلبٍ هَوْت نارُ الجحيم

    The gardens of eternity settled in it

    While in Aleppo the fires of Hell ignited

  19. إِذا عُرضت عليك رأَيت فيها

    عِراصَ الخير دائرةَ الرُّسوم

    When presented to you, you will see in it

    The cycle of good, the range of schemes

  20. مُناخُ للأَراذل منذ كانت

    محرَّمَةٌ على الحرّ الكريم

    A habitat for scoundrels since it was

    Forbidden to the honorable and dignified

  21. أَقمتُ بها فلم يظفر طِلابي

    بذي أَدبٍ ولا خِلٍّ حميم

    I stayed in it but my pursuits found

    No one of morals or an intimate friend

  22. وأَرذلُ من ترى فيها وأَخزى

    ذوو الأَقداء والحسب الصميم

    The lowest and most disgraceful you see

    Are the vile and the worthless

  23. تُرى يحنو الزمان عليَّ يوماً

    فأَشكو ما لقِيت إِلى رحيم

    You'd think time will one day pity me

    So I complain of what I faced to the Merciful

  24. لعلّ الله أَن يُدني زماناً

    تَهُبّ لنا به ريحُ القُدوم

    Perhaps God will bring nearer a time

    In which for us will blow the winds of return

  25. وأبناء الزمان كما تراهم

    أَفاعٍ دأْبُها نَفْثُ السّمومِ

    The people of the age, as you see them

    Are snakes whose nature is spewing poison

  26. فلا يحنو القويُّ على ضعيفٍ

    ولا يصل المَخوف إِلى رَؤوم

    The strong do not pity the weak

    Nor does the frightened reach the merciful

  27. وسُقت إليهم الآمال حَثّاً

    فما وجدتْ سوى مرعىً وَخيم

    Hopes were driven to them hastily

    But found nothing except a miserable pasture

  28. رأَيتُ سحائباً فظننتُ فيها

    رَذاذاً مُنْعِشاً لثرىً عديم

    I saw clouds so I thought in them

    A reviving drizzle for arid land

  29. يحاربني الزمان وأَيّ والٍ

    يناصفني وأَيامي خُصومي

    Time battles me, and what ally

    Will stand by me and my days that oppose me

  30. تَبَلَّغْ باليسير وعِش كريماً

    وغُضّ الطرف عن نظر اللئيم

    Deliver with ease and live nobly

    And turn a blind eye to the gaze of the unworthy

  31. فقد عقمت عن الكرم اللّيالي

    فلا تَرْجُ الوِلادة من عقيم

    For the nights have sterilized generosity

    So do not expect birth from the sterile

  32. وناديتُ العفاف: إِذا اقتسمنا

    فكن ما عشتُ في الدنيا قسيمي

    And I called on chastity, "If we share

    Then remain what I lived with in the world as my partner"
