1. The night of suffering turned pitch-black,

    and sorrow raged within my heart.

  2. Yet I made my heart content

    with God and whatever He decreed.

  3. Behind my principles I cast

    the delusions of those who betrayed the pen.

    I sent my poetry to the clou—

    —ds; it returned bearing abundant rain.

  5. With patience I drove despair away,

    and never complained of whatever befell me.

  6. I lit my night with certainty,

    so it neither lingered nor grew somber.

  7. ،

    Between glory and me there was a connec—

    —tion by which I reached the summits.

  8. ،

    There I clasped hands with goodness, rejoic—

    —ing, and embraced moral values.

  9. ،

    And I built an edifice for lo—

    —ve, affection, and generosity.

  10. I swear by God, the One who

    created existence out of nothingness:

  11. ،

    no despair has circled around me, nor

    has pain veiled my hope.

  12. I am a Muslim, from a community

    balanced among the nations.
