O my heart, Jeddah, how persistent is your persistence
And how your complaints and sorrows have not avoided me
Your branches are swept by a torrential flood, and I
Am a torrent of distress and pain that swept me away
When I saw faces that I used to know
Radiant with contentment, now misery meets me
I felt that the wounds of the heart are bleeding
And a voice from tragedy called out to me
O Jeddah's heart, o a pulse that makes me alternate
Between passion and deprivation, deprivation and passion
My poetry still sheds the tears of its letters
And my tears kept flowing in rhythmic measures
When I heard a young man recount his tale
A story that distressed my eyes with tears
The young man was at the door of the house, scorched
By distress and pains, fires
The grieving one called out to every corner
In the house, sending in it a forlorn specter
O house, o grave of my dreams that drowned
In Jeddah's flood, o my waves and deluge
And o the flame of sorrow in the heart of its resident
I see you burning my papers and branches
This is the "room" of my heart that came to deny me
And it expressed its rejection and denial of me
I lost in it my addresses, no wonder
It lost after the flood my address
Yesterday, my house was filled with the companionship of its resident
My father, mother, sisters and brothers
And today, alone, yes alone, the phantoms of my worries pursue me
And sorrow burns my passion
Yesterday, the family was together in the embraced home
Serenity of mind and good tidings were two friends
Together we followed the news of the pilgrims, and in
Our hopes was an image from our next day
Together we shaped for the day of Eid its joy
Among family, loved ones and neighbors
Tomorrow we will slaughter a sacrifice in the afternoon
Tomorrow I will meet my peers in high spirit
Tomorrow, tomorrow, this is how man unleashes it
In the voice of his dreams in every field
And no tomorrow came to me but with calamity
If not for my faith, it would have shaken all my pillars
The young man was drowning in the misery of his condition
Like a bird whose two wings were broken
I consoled him, and my heart had the same affliction
And sorrow that if he knew would also console me
I said: be patient my brother and persevere, be a man
Who has from patience and faith two coats of mail
Be forbearing and raise your hand to the sky
For patience and comfort are two companions
If the one who destined demise willed it
Upon the heads of mountains with peaks
Or in fortresses and erected towers
Guarded with fences and walls
The decree of the Merciful would have reached him
Annihilating the poor and the mighty and the sultan
O you who stood by the mouths of valleys
That were blocked with rubble, stone and concrete
Do not despair, for we have in our Lord a substitute
If we show patience and submission
Our distress is sufficient blessing that we boast of
What God gives of pardon and forgiveness
