ترى العينُ ما لا يريدُ الفؤادُ

ويبغي الفؤاد الذي لا ترى

The eye sees what the heart does not desire

While the heart desires what cannot be seen

يُريد الفؤاد مكان الثريَ

ولا تلمح العينُ إلا الثرى

The heart yearns for a place of wealth

Yet the eye glimpses only a mound of earth

ألا أيها القلبُ هذا زمانٌ

يُباع الكريمُ ولا يُشترى

Oh heart, this is an age

When the noble are sold and cannot be bought

أرى ربعك اليوم قد انكروك

ومن عادة الناس أن تنكرا

I see your own people deny you today

And it is the way of people to deny

فإما الشعور بما يشعرون

وإلا فإيَاك أن تشعرا

Either feel what they feel

Or else beware of feeling
