I swear, O my nation, by a heritage deep-rooted,
That you shall return to the straight and righteous path.
How we have longed to return to your tender embrace,
Beneath a verdant, shading tree of brotherhood.
We have grown weary of the war of discord, yet we guarded
The unity of our ranks from the hand of division.
O sons of my nation, seek brotherhood and closeness;
My voice has grown hoarse from calling out for unity.
How often I called upon companions, both West and East,
Whether Asian in struggle or "African."
The Arab nation lies crushed between two millstones:
In a barren land where the blood of brotherhood is spilled,
And an invader seeking to swallow its very soil,
Aided by a faction incited against another.
Or an instigator of conflict who came to us,
Plotting deceit, not seeking to save the drowning.
O peoples of my nation, torn apart by
The cruelty of events—awake from your slumber!
Reconsider your judgment again and again,
Regarding matters that burdened you beyond endurance.
How often you bore the burden of a fierce, recurring war,
That tore apart the bonds of friend and brother?
How often, with the fire of discord, have you burned affection,
Between two peoples amidst encompassing destruction?
Every passing day creates a new plight,
Where the sedition of fragmentation hastens its pace.
That Gulf War stands as a warning among them,
Creeping with annihilation across the strait.
I said: O brothers of Arabism, come forth,
Support your brethren in their distress and hardship.
Aid them with strength or with arms,
To deter the adversary—let him taste the flame.
And prepare, to crush him, all that you can muster,
Of fated deaths, thunderbolts, and fire.
What of these fleets cleaving through the waves?
Does a sound mind seek protection behind them?
How often they came to us, though summoned not
By aught but their own insolent greed.
How often their intent is merely to display might,
Seeking nothing but their well-trodden agenda?
Does the enemy of peace ever save a neighbor,
Who is not of his kin, as a brother would help?
He has gone astray who seeks shade under a tyrant,
One not of his people, nor a true friend.
Do you deem him truthful in his promise,
If he spies a chance for prey driven before him?
The experiences of time have taught us never
To trust in the false promise of flashing lightning.
So awake, O Arab nation—rise in true awakening,
And gather the fragments of your crushed glory.
Unite the ranks of these peoples and restore
Arab unity, for a leap that surpasses all.
For the solution lies available within your hands,
In a reunion of brotherhood, sincere and true.
