1. تذكّرتُ أيامَ من قد مَضى

    فهاجَ لي الدمعَ سحّاً هتونا

    I recalled the days of those who passed away

    So tears flowed copiously out of sorrow

  2. فرَدَّدتُ في النفس ذكراهُمُ

    ليُحدِثَ ذلك للقلب لينا

    I repeated their memory in my soul

    So that may soften the heart a little

  3. فقُلتُ لنَفسي وعاتبتُها

    وقد أبت النفسُ أن تستَلينا

    I said to myself and reproached it

    And the soul refused to be softened

  4. أتنسَينَ آثار من قد مضى

    ودهراً تقاسيهِ قدما خؤونا

    Do you forget the traces of those who passed away

    And time which we painfully spent

  5. وقرع المنايا وايقاعُها

    وصوتُ الصوائح فيما بُلينا

    And the strike of death and its falling

    And the voice of calamity in our affliction

  6. وما إن نزالُ على حادثٍ

    يطيرُ لهُ القلبُ روعا حزينا

    Whenever we are faced with an accident

    The heart flies in sad horror

  7. وما تهدأ النفس حتى أصا

    ب بأخرى حديدٍ تصيبُ الوتينا

    And the soul does not rest until it is hit

    By another iron spear that pierces the bosom

  8. وإمّا دراكاً على إثرِها

    وقدما تكادُ تهدُّ المتونا

    Either closely following it

    Or feet that almost demolish the body

  9. وفى كل يوم وفي مسيةٍ

    تكونُ النوائبُ بالموتِ فينا

    And in every day and night

    Calamities with death are within us

  10. وإما قريبا تراشُ به

    وإما شمالا وإمّا يمينا

    Either it takes a close one

    Whether from the right or from the left

  11. إذا سكن الروع عن ميّتٍ

    بدهنا بآخرَ ينعى السكونا

    When fright leaves a dead one

    It saddens us with another, disturbing tranquility

  12. وكيف البقاء على ما أرى

    ستوتين عما قليل يقينا

    And how can one remain as I see

    The pillars falling, certainly soon

  13. دفنتُ الأحبةَ لم آلها

    أهيل عليها ترابا وطينا

    I buried the loved ones and did not lament over them

    I poured dust and clay over them

  14. وكانت تعزُّ على أهلها

    وأعزز بها اليوم أيضا دفينا

    They were so dear to their family

    And today I am burying them, most cherished indeed

  15. لقد غيّب القبرُ في لحدهِ

    وقاراً نبيلا وبراً ودنيا

    The grave has hidden in its enclosure

    Dignity, nobility, righteousness and lowly status

  16. وصحبي والأهلُ فارقتهم

    وكنتُ أراهُم رفاقاً عزينا

    And companions and family I have parted with

    I used to see them as dear companions

  17. كأنّ تأوبَ أهليهم

    حنينُ عشارٍ تحبُّ الحنينا

    As if longing of their families for them

    Is the yearning of lovers who love yearning

  18. وإخوانُ صدق لحقنا بهم

    فقد كنتُ بالقرب منهم ضَنينا

    And brothers of truth have joined them

    I used to be intimate in their company

  19. وأوحشَت الدار من بعدهم

    أظَلُّ على ذكرهم مستكينا

    Their homes became desolate after them

    I remain remembering them, feeling wretched

  20. أرى الناسَ يبكون موتاهمُ

    وما الحَيُّ أبقى من الميّتينا

    I see people crying for their dead

    While the living are not more lasting than the dead

  21. أليسَ مصيرهم للفنا

    وإن عمَّرَ القوم أيضا سنينا

    Is not their fate destruction

    Even if the people lived for years

  22. يساقون سوقاً إلى يومهم

    فهُم في السياق وما يشعرونا

    They will be driven to their day heedlessly

    So if you cry for those who passed away

  23. فإن كنت تبكينَ من قد مضى

    فبكّي لنفسك في الهالكينا

    Then cry for yourself among the doomed

    And cry extensively for yourself

  24. وبكّي لنفسك جهد البكا

    إذا كنتِ تبكين أو تغفلينا

    If you are crying or forgetting

    For the path for you is one

  25. فإنّ السبيل لكم واحدٌ

    سيتّبِعُ الآخرُ الأولينا

    The latter will follow the former

    And if you are deluded with living

  26. وإن كنتِ بالعيشِ مغتَرَّةً

    تمنّيك نفسُكِ فيها الظنونا

    Wishing yourself vain hopes

    Then visit your graves and look

  27. فتادي قبورَكِ ثمّ انظري

    مصارِعَ أهلكِ والأقربينا

    At the resting places of your family and kin

    To where they went and what they met

  28. إلى أينَ صاروا وماذا لقوا

    وكانوا كمثلك في الدور حيناً

    And they were like you living in homes

    And where are the kings and people of prestige

  29. وأينَ الملوك وأهل الحجا

    ومن كنت ترضين أو تحذريا

    Those you were pleased with or wary of

    And where are those who built before us

  30. وأين الذين بَنوا قبلَنا

    قروناً نتابعُ تتلو القرونا

    Generations we follow, succeeding generations

    I have lived years that are gone

  31. أتيتُ بسنّين قد رُمّتا

    من الحصن لما أثاروا الدفينا

    Throwing the built from the ruins

    One of them turns the palm

  32. على وزن منين إحداهُما

    تقلّ بها الكف شيئا رزينا

    Into something insignificant

    Thirty others similar to it

  33. ثلاثين أخرى على قدرها

    تباركت يا أحسن الخالقينا

    Blessed are You, the Best of Creators

    So what can their mouths do

  34. فماذا يقومُ لأفواهِهم

    تباركَت يا أحسن الخالقينا

    When I recall their bodies

    The soul diminishes until it becomes insignificant

  35. إذا ما تذكّرتُ أجسامَهُم

    تصاغَرت النفسُ حتى تهونا

    And each met destruction in the same way

    And all perished, they are now lifeless

  36. وكل على ذاك لاقى الردى

    وبادوا جميعا فهم خامِدونا
