1. ساهرٌ والليل في جفنيه نامْ

    وتنامى في صدى الصمت الكلامْ

    Awake while the night sleeps in my eyelids,

    And words sleep in the echo of silence.

  2. يستعيد الريح أشواقا مشتْ

    سلكَ ياقوتٍ وأحجارٍ وجامْ

    The wind recalls desires that have passed,

    A necklace of rubies, stones, and a cup.

  3. في سُرى الذكرى تناغى طيرها

    همسةً حرّى وأشجاناً تُؤامْ

    In the path of memories, her birds twittered

    A burning whisper and paired laments.

  4. يتملاّها , تملاَّه : هوًى

    أو جوًى يكوي مصاريعَ العظامْ

    It fills her, fills her: yearning

    Or nostalgia that sears the joints of bones.

  5. قال في بيدرها الظامي: أنا

    من أنا يا أنت ياهذا الزحامْ

    He said in her dark stable: I am

    Who I am, O you, O this crowd!

  6. ترتقي بي في ذرى الأعوام تهـ

    ـفو تناديني على البعد سلامْ

    You carry me to the planets of years, you

    Call me from afar, peace!

  7. طوقتني من بقاياك منًى

    لم تجد بعد مطاياها العظامْ

    You’ve collared me with remnants of yourself

    That have not yet found their bone steeds.

  8. وطوتني في مراياكِ رؤًى

    عذبةٌ كانت مراراتٍ زُؤامْ

    And folded me in your mirrors, visions

    Sweet that were once bitter adversities.

  9. وتصبّتني بعينيكِ صُوًى

    جدّفتْ صوبَ مجاليها الرِّهامْ

    And poured me with your eyes torrents

    That paddled their arrows toward my dunes.

  10. أطربتني.. أرّقتني.. وطوتْ

    في سجلّ النفس أصداءَ اليَمامْ

    You thrilled me...kept me awake...and folded

    In the soul’s registry the echoes of turtle doves.

  11. هي دنيا من بقايا دنتْ

    ومطلّ للغد الآتي الضرامْ

    It’s a world made of remnants that crumbled,

    And an outlook to the coming, hostile future.

  12. هكذا التفتْ مداراتُ الدُّنى

    في مدار الليل أمشاجاً تُسامْ

    So the orbits of this earthly life revolved

    In the night’s orbit intermingled mixtures.

  13. ليلة واحدة قد لبستْ

    من ليالي العُمْرِ فيها ألفَ عامْ

    One night alone wore

    From the nights of a lifetime a thousand years in it.

  14. وهل العُمْرُ سِوَى ليلٍٍ هَمَى

    أو سِوَى ليلٍ تولى كالجهامْ

    Is a lifetime anything but a slumbering night

    Or but a night that passed like a predator?

  15. قد يظلّ الفجرُ طفلاً ضارعاً

    مشرئبَ الثّغْرِ للنهدِ الفِطامْ

    Dawn might remain a suckling child

    Teething on the breast of weaning.

  16. دَرَّ في وَعْدِ الخبايا دَرُّها

    ساعة روّته ألبانَ الغرامْ

    It rolled in the promise of ruins, rolling

    The moment it suckled the milk of passion.

  17. فإذا النورُ بنا ينداحُ كالـ

    ـلثغةِ الأولى.. شآبيباً سِجامْ

    Then the light bursts within us like the

    First lisping...glittering sparks.

  18. تزرعُ الرّملَ نهاراتٍ سَرَتْ

    في عروقِ الليلِ آمادَ الظَّلامْ

    It sows days in the sands that flowed

    In the veins of night, pillars of darkness.

  19. ساهراً والليلُ في جفنيْ ينامْ

    يتسجّى من دمي سيفاً كهامْ

    Awake while the night sleeps in my eyelids,

    Clothing itself from my blood in an unsheathed sword.

  20. من دمي الدافي ال تشظّى وردةً

    ملءَ أفواه قوافينا الحطامْ

    From my fervent blood, no rose petal sprayed

    To fill our rhyming mouths, debris.

  21. ملءَ هذا السَّهْبِ من غيهبنا

    ملءَ أثداء السبايا في الخيامْ

    To fill this flat land of our absence,

    To fill the bosoms of captives in tents.

  22. سيصول الوقتُ منها ملأهُ

    سيردّ الخيل إصباح القتامْ

    Time will charge from it fully armed,

    Horses will counter the darkness at dawn.

  23. سيشدّ الكرّةَ البِكْرَ غَدٌ

    سيروّي السّلّةَ النَّشْوى حُسامْ

    Tomorrow will knot the maiden’s tress,

    Will quench the thirst with a sword’s drink.

  24. يومها فليهن جفنيكَ الكَرَى

    نيمةَ الطفل وأحلامَ الحَمامْ

    On that day, may your slumbering eyelid rejoice

    In the catnap of a babe and the dreams of a pigeon.

  25. ساهرٌ يذبحه صمتُ النيامْ

    ما عليه؟! جَرّ سكينَ الكلامْ

    Awake while the silence of sleep slaughters him

    What of him?! He dragged the word knife

  26. حَزّ في ماء الوريدِ حَزّةً

    أوشكتْ توقظُ أنفاسَ الرِّمامْ

    He etched in the water of a vein an etching

    That nearly awakened the breaths of archers

  27. ربما أحياكَ تصهالُ الظُّبَى

    ولقد يفنيكَ تسبيحُ الغمامْ

    Maybe your awakening will revive me

    And the praising of clouds may do away with me
