هزّت كياني وما أدراك ما الحال

وأرّقتني ولماّ يهدأ البال

It shook my being, though I know not what state it was in,

And it kept me awake, though the mind would not settle,

وجاذبتني عناني وهي صامدة

والحاديات إلى الغايات آمال

It pulled at my reins, and it stood firm,

While the resolute aspirations head for their goals as hopes,

وسابقت خطوات الدهر صاعدةً

حتى تسامت وكل الكون إقبال

It outran the footsteps of time while ascending

Until it towered high and the whole universe looks up,

وحاذَتِ الركب في زحف التقدم عن

وعي وشاهد نص القول أفعال

It caught up with the caravan in the march of progress,

The essence of the word its actions testify,

سل المحيطات عن أسطولها وسل الـ

ـقفار عن خيلها إن يُجد تسآل

Ask the oceans about its fleet, and ask the deserts

About its horses, if questioning finds a response,

وسل بها آسيا إن كنت تعرفها

وسل أُوروّبا وما أدراك ما الحال

And ask Asia about it, if you happen to know it,

And ask Europe, though I know not what state it was in,

سل المغارب عنها والمشارق والد

نيا تجدها على التاريخ تختال

Ask the West and East about it, and the whole world -

You will find it strutting across history,

وسل بها الفلك الدوار يحمل في

صروفه الآي منها وهي أعمال

And ask the revolving cosmos, which carries in its cycles

Signs from it, and these are its deeds,

حيِّ الجلندى وصلت والخليل بها

ووارثا والمهناّ وهي إجلال

It revived the Galendi, and the Friend with it,

And the inheritor, and the protector - it is reverence,

وناصر وابن سلطان الذي رضخت

له فقيدّ منه الأرض فعّال

And the helper, and Ibn Sultân, to whom

The earth yielded - so its actions were consequential,

وأحمد ابن سعيد والألى حكموا

فحكّموا الحق والآياتُ عُماّل

And Ahmad ibn Saïd, and the exalted ones who ruled

So they ruled with truth, and the signs are actions,

عمان منبت أهل الله من قدم

ومعقل العز والعلياء سربال

Oman - abode of God's people since early times,

And bastion of glory and the most exalted, a wrap,

عمان ما جشأت للذعر جازعة

يوما ولا ركعت والشر زلزال

Oman - it never panicked before any terror,

Nor bent a day, though ills are quaking,

هبت إلى المصطفى تسعى طواعيةً

ولم يقدها له سيف وعسّال

It sprang to the Chosen One, voluntarily hastening,

No sword or arms led it to Him,

وجاذبت بُرة الدنيا غداة رأت

طيش المعاقل والعقّال مختال

It pulled the fleece of the world when at dawn it saw

The citadels’ madness, reason confused,

فكم سهام على لباتها اشتبكت

شقت بها دربها والكيد صوّال

So how many arrows against its flanks intertwined!

It cut its path through them, while guile crept,

يا قائد الركب يا حادي مسيرتها

خذها لأمجادها فالنور شلاّل

O leader of the caravan, O guide of its course,

Take it to its glories, for the light is a torrent,

وكن لها قبسا يهدي طليعتها

إلى المعاقل حيث النصر والخال

And be for it a spark that guides its vanguard

To the citadels, where triumph and the halo are found,

وارسم بجدك آيات الجلال بها

ليقرأ الدهر والقراء أحوال

And outline with your strength signs of majesty in it,

That time may read, and the readers - states,

وسر بشعبك يحدوه الشباب إلى

مضارب العز حيث الدين سلسال

And travels with your people, led by youth to

The abodes of glory, where the faith is a chain,

وقل لهم والورى مصغٍ مسامعه

ودهرهم ذابل ماض وذبال

And say to them, while existence listens closely,

And their time withered, past, decayed:

بنيّ يا صغوة الأبطال من يمن

ومن نزار إذا ما عدّ أبطال

My sons, O cubs of heroes from Yemen

And from Nizar, when heroes are counted,

ورثتم المجد أبنائي حقيقته

وأنتم فوق هام النجم حلال

You inherited true glory, my sons,

While you are above the brow of the starry dome,

فباركوا خطوات الجد بينكم

فكل آبائكم شهم ومبذال

So bless the steps of endeavor among you,

For each of your forebears was valiant, sacrificing,

تعمق الدين في أحسابهم فجرى

كالأري يشفي به في الكون ضلاّل

Faith took root in their moral beings, so it flowed

Like a bountiful rain, curing strayings in the world,

ففاخروا أمم الدنيا بهم أبدا

إن قام يفخر بالأفضال مفضال

So pride yourselves before the world’s nations, forever,

If one priding himself on virtues takes pride,

إن يفخر الناس بالنعماء ضافية

فإن فخركم بذل وإقلال

Or people pride themselves on boons of plenty -

For your pride is in giving and humbling,

أو يفخر الدهر في طيش وفي نزق

فإن فخركم في الحق إيغال

Or time prides itself in caprice and vileness -

For your pride is immersing yourselves in truth,

فثابروا سيرة كانت لسالفكم

لها على كفة الإيمان أثقال

So follow the conduct your ancestors had,

Weighty for them on the scale of faith,

وجابنوا الهزل في أعمالكم فلكم

ساءت على الهزل أعمال وأقوال

And shun frivolity in your deeds, for worthless

Are for you deeds and words that mock,

والله يحفظ فيكم كل موهبة

أورثتموها لها بالختم إكمال

And God preserves every gift He granted you,

You inherited it, and by the seal He completed it.
