1. ساهٍ، في مقعدِهِ المُهمل

    كسؤالٍ ينسى أن يسألْ

    Forgotten, in his neglected seat

    Like a question that forgets to ask

  2. كحريقٍ يبحثُ عن نارٍ

    فيهِ عن وقدتهِ يذهلْ

    Like a fire searching for a flame

    In which to kindle itself, bewildered

  3. كجنينٍ في نهدي أُم

    لهفى تتمنّى أن تحبلْ

    Like an embryo in the bosom of a mother

    Yearning for her to become pregnant

  4. يطفو ويقرُّ كعصفورٍ

    تواقٍ في قفصٍ مُقفلْ

    He floats and settles like a little bird

    Yearning in a locked cage

  5. يستقي كالحُلمِ الظَّامي

    ويحدق كالطيفِ الأحولْ

    He sips like a dark dream

    And stares like a blind specter

  6. فيشمُّ خُطى الفَجرِ الآتي

    في مُنتصفِ اللَّيلِ الأليلْ

    He smells the footsteps of the coming dawn

    In the middle of the long night

  7. ويصوغُ الصَّمتَ ضُحى غَزِلاً

    وأصيلاً ورديّاً أكحلْ

    And he forms the silence into morning coquetry

    Native and roseate and kohl-darkened

  8. ويُضيعُ جمالاً مَبذولاً

    في الكشفِ عن العدمِ الأجملْ

    And he wastes proffered beauty

    In revealing the most beautiful void

  9. يشدو للزَّاويةِ الكَسلى

    ويُصيخُ إلى الرُّكنِ الأكسَلْ

    He chants to the lazy corner

    And appeals to the most indolent nook

  10. ويُفتشُ عن فَمهِ الثَّاني

    ويحنُّ إلى فمِهِ الأوَّلْ

    And searches for his second mouth

    And yearns for his first mouth

  11. والأربعةُ الجدرانُ إلى

    عينيهِ تُصغي، تتأملْ

    And the four walls listen

    To his eyes, attentively watching

  12. ترنُو كفتاةٍ تستجدي

    غَزَلاً, وإذا ابتَسَمَتْ تخجلْ

    Beckoning like a girl begging

    For love, and when she smiles, bashful

  13. يغلي ويمورُ كما يعدُو

    في كف العاصفةِ المِشعلْ

    He seethes and rages like a fire

    In the palm of a flaming storm

  14. مَرميٌّ كالقبرِ المَنسي

    وإلى كُلِّ الدُّنيا يرحلْ

    Cast off like a forgotten grave

    And to all the world he travels

  15. يغزو الأقمارَ ولا يَعيا

    ويخوضُ البحرَ ولا يَبتَلْ

    He invades the moons and does not tire

    And crosses the sea and does not get wet

  16. في كُلِّ روايةِ فنَّانٍ

    مِن قِصَّتِهِ الفَصلُ الأطوَلْ

    In every storyteller’s tale

    His is the longest chapter

  17. في كُلِّ تثَنِّي أُغنيةٍ

    أنثى لهواهُ تتجمَّلْ

    In every twist of a song

    A female adorns herself for his passion

  18. في كُلِّ كتابٍ عن بطلٍ

    أخبارٌ عنهُ لم تُنقلْ

    In every book about a hero

    There is news of him not conveyed

  19. حيّاً في التاريخِ الفاني

    في الكُثبانِ العَطشى يخضلْ

    Alive in ephemeral history

    In the thirsty dunes he withers

  20. يقتادُ الخيلَ (عنترةٍ)

    يجترُّ الزِّقَّ مع (الأخطَلْ)

    He leads the horse (Antarah)

    He drags the train with (al-Akhtal)

  21. ويُناضلُ (قيصرَ) في (روما)

    كـ(سِبِرتاكوس) ولا يَفْشَلْ

    And battles (Caesar) in (Rome)

    Like (Spartacus) and does not fail

  22. يطوي (الإسكندرَ) في يدِهِ

    ويجولُ على كتفي (أخيَلْ)

    He folds (Alexander) in his hand

    And roams on the shoulder of (Achilles)

  23. ويردُّ اليومَ إلى الماضي

    ويعيدُ الماضيَ مُستقبلْ

    And returns today to yesterday

    And makes yesterday the future

  24. ويلُمُّ الأزمنةَ الشّتى

    لحظاتٍ تعرفُ ما تجهلْ

    And brings together different times

    Into moments that know what they ignore

  25. تتشهَّى ،تنوي، تتحدَّى

    تستأني ،تَعدو، تتخيَّلْ

    They desire, intend, challenge

    Hesitate, race, imagine

  26. فيعفرُ (ابرهةَ)،يُذكي

    عينَي (سينا) بدمِ المُحتلْ

    So he stirs up (Abraha), and ignites

    The eyes of (Sinai) with the blood of the invader

  27. يهمي فوقَ (الجولانِ) لظىً

    يرمي بـ(الشِّمرِ) عن المنهلْ

    He swoops, flaming, over (the Golan)

    And casts (al-Shimar) away from the spring

  28. يمحو (سايجونَ) بإصبعِهِ

    ويُمزِّقُ (خيبرَ) بالمِنجلْ

    With his finger he erases (Saigon)

    And shreds (Khyber) with the sickle

  29. يلقي عن صَهوتِهِ (كِسْرى)

    ويقاتلُ في (حيفا) أعزلْ

    He hurls (Khosrow) from his palace

    And battles weaponless in (Haifa)

  30. يُدميهِ القصفُ ولا يُدْمي

    يُرديهِ القتلُ ولا يُقتَلْ

    The bombardment wounds him not

    The killing does not kill him

  31. يَهفُو من حلقِ الموتِ إلى

    أعتابِ الميلادِ الأحفَلْ

    He escapes from the throat of death

    To the most lowly birth-place

  32. يَجتَثُّ الكونَ ليبدأهُ

    أسْخى ويشكِّلَهُ أفضلْ

    He uproots the universe to remake it

    Richer and shape it better

  33. ويصوغُ العالمَ ثانيةً

    أو يأمُرُهُ أن يتحوَّلْ

    And recasts the world anew

    Or commands it to transform

  34. مَرمِيُّ يرحلُ من بُعدٍ

    كالهولِ إلى البُعدِ الأهْوَلْ

    A castaway traveling from remoteness

    Like a specter to greater specterness

  35. في كل متاهٍ يستهدي

    في كل حريقٍ يتغسل

    In every labyrinth he seeks guidance

    In every conflagration he bathes

  36. يغزو المجهولَ بلا وعيٍٍ

    ويَعي لا يدري ما يفعلْ

    He invades the unknown unconsciously

    And unconsciously does not know what he does

  37. فيعودُ يُشكل ما ألغى

    أو يمضي يمحو ما شَكَّلْ

    So he returns to shape what he destroyed

    Or goes on erasing what took shape
