    Because he is from Yemen

  2. تباع أرض شعبه

    وتشترى بلا ثمن

    His people's land is sold

    And bought for nothing

  3. يبكي إذا سألته

    من أين أنت؟ أنت من؟

    He weeps when you ask him

    Where are you from? Where are you from?

  4. لأنه من لا هنا

    أو من مزائد العلن

    Because he is from nowhere

    Or from auctioned publicity

  5. مواطن كان حما

    هـُ من (قُبا) إلى (عدن)

    A citizen who was protective

    From Quba to Aden

  6. واليوم لم تعد له

    مزارع ولا سكن

    And today he no longer has

    Farms or dwellings

  7. ولا ظلال حائطٍ

    ولا بقايا من فنن

    No shades of walls

    No remnants of arts

  8. بلاده سطر على

    كتاب (عبرة الزمن)

    His country is a line in

    The book of Time's Lesson

  9. رواية عن (اسعد)

    اسطورة عن (ذي يزن)

    A story about As'ad

    A legend about Dhi Yazan

  10. حكاية عن هدهد

    كان عميلاً مؤتمن

    A tale about Hoopoe

    Who was a trusted agent

  11. وعن ملوك استبوا

    أو سبأوا مليون دن

    And about kings who vanished

    Or Saba'a million years

  12. الملك كان ملكهم

    سواه (قعب من لبن)

    The king was their king

    Other than Qa'ab made of yoghurt

  13. واليوم طفل حميرٍ

    بلا أبٍ بلا صبا

    And today a donkey child

    Without a father or youth

  14. بلا مدينة بلا

    مخابىء، بلا رُبا

    Without a city without

    Hideouts, without plots of land

  15. يغزوه ألف هدهد

    وتنثني بلا نبا

    Invaded by a thousand hoopoes

    And it coils without cobras

  16. يكفيه أن أمه

    (ريا) وجده (سبأ)

    It's enough that his mother

    is Rayya and his grandfather is Saba'a

  17. وأن عم خاله

    كان يزين (يحصبا)

    And that his uncle's brother-in-law

    was Yemen's Yahsub

  18. وأن خال عمه

    كان يقود (أرحبا)

    And that his aunt's cousin

    was leading Arhab

  19. كانوا يضيئون الدجى

    ويعبدون (الكوكبا)

    They used to illuminate the darkness

    And worship the stars

  20. يدرون ما شادوا،ولا

    يدرون ماذا خربا؟

    They knew what they built, but did not

    know what they had ruined

  21. يبنون للفار العُلا

    ويزرعون للدُبى

    They build high abodes for mice

    And plant for insects

  22. يا ناسج (الإكليل) قل:

    تلك الجباه من غَبا

    O weaver of the wreath, say:

    Those brows are from absence

  23. أو سمها كواكباً

    تمنعت أن تعربا

    Or name them planets

    That refused to be Arabized

  24. فهل لها ذرية

    من الشموخ والإبا؟

    Do they have offspring

    Of grandeur and glory?

  25. اليوم أرض (مأرب)

    كأمها موجهه

    Today, the land of Ma'rib

    is like its mother, turbulent

  26. يقودها كأمها

    فاروسوط (أبرهه)

    Led like its mother

    By Farasut Abraha's mouse

  27. فما أمر أمسها

    ويومها ما أشبهه

    So what's the matter with its yesterday

    And its day, how similar

  28. تبيع لون وجهها

    للأوجه المموهه

    It sells the color of its face

    To masked faces

  29. (تموز) في عيونها

    كالعانس المولهه

    Tammuz in its eyes

    Like an old spinster

  30. والشمس في جبينها

    كاللوحة المشوهه

    And the sun on its forehead

    Like a distorted painting

  31. فيا(سهيل)هل ترى

    أسئلة مدلهه؟

    So O Suhail, do you see

    Silly questions?

  32. متى يفيق ها هنا

    شعب يعي تنبهه؟

    When will this people here awake

    A people aware and vigilant?

  33. وقبل أن يرنو إلى

    شيء يرى ما أتفهه

    And before it aspires

    To something, sees how trivial

  34. فينتقي تحت الضحى

    وجوهه المنزهه

    Then under the glow of dawn

    Chooses its untainted faces

  35. يمضي وينسى خلفه

    عاداته المسفهه

    Moves on and leaves behind

    Its frivolous customs

  36. يفنى بكل ذرة

    من أرضه المؤلهه

    It perishes with every atom

    Of its idolized land

  37. هنا يحس أنه

    مواطن له وطن

    A citizen with a homeland
