My country, from the grip of one tyrant
To a more cruel, a more heartless one,
From one prison to another prison,
From one exile to another exile,
From one vanishing colonizer,
To a more hidden one,
And from one monster, to a more monstrous one,
This is the never satisfied she-camel.
My country, in the caves of oppression,
Does not perish, nor is healed,
Pecking in the graves of the bald-headed,
Seeking its most noble birth,
And the promise of its spring,
Behind its most sleepy eyes,
Of the dream that is coming,
Of the specter that mocked,
Thus it passes from a gloomy dusk,
To a darker dusk, to a murkier one.
My country, in the lands of others,
Or in its own land, yearning,
Even in its own territories,
It suffers the exile of the exiled.
