1. على المقعدِ الرِّاحلِ المُستقرِّ

    تطيرين مثلي ومثلي لهيفهْ

    On the departed seat, settled

    You fly like me, and like me fiery

  2. ومثلي أنا، صرتُ عبدَ العبيدِ

    وأنتِ لكُلِّ الجواري وصيفَةْ

    And like me, I have become a slave of slaves

    While you are a companion to all maidens

  3. كِلانا تُخشبنا الأمنياتُ

    وتعصرُنا الذكرياتُ العنيفةْ

    Both of us are fossilized by wishes

    And squeezed by fierce memories

  4. فَقَدنَا الخليفةَ مُذْ باعَنا

    إلى كُلِّ سوقٍ جنودُ الخلفية

    So we lost the Caliph since we were sold

    To every market, the soldiers of the past

  5. أصنعا إلى أينَ؟ أمضي أعودُ

    لأمضي، كأنِّي أؤدّى وظيفَةْ

    Where should I go? Should I return

    To return, as if I were performing a duty

  6. مَلكْتَ المطاراتِ والطَّائراتِ

    وأكلي (جرادٌ) لأنِّي سخيفَةْ

    You owned the airports and airplanes

    While I eat (locusts) because I am worthless

  7. ومملكتي هودجٌ من رياحٍ

    تروحُ عجولاً وتأتي خفيفَةْ

    And my kingdom is a tent of winds

    That go restless and come gentle

  8. أتبكينَ؟ لا، لا ومن تؤسِفينَ

    إذا أنتِ مقهورةٌ أو أسيفَهْ

    Do you cry? No, no and who would you grieve for

    If you are oppressed or miserable

  9. وماذا سيحدثُ لو تَصرُخِينَ

    وتَتَّزرينَ الدُّموعَ الكَثيفَةْ

    And what would happen if you screamed

    And shed plentiful, flowing tears

  10. سيرنو إليكِ الرَّفيقُ اللَّصيقُ

    وينساكِ حينَ تَمُرُّ المُضيفَةْ

    The close friend would turn to you

    And forget you when the hostess passes

  11. ويُعطيكِ قُرصَينَ مِنْ (أسبرين)

    فتىً طيبٌ أو عجوزٌ لطيفَةْ

    And give you two pills of (Aspirin)

    A kind lad or gentle old woman

  12. وقد لا يراكِ فتىً أو عجوز

    ولا يلمحُ الجارُ تلك الضَّعيفَةْ

    Perhaps no lad or old woman would see you

    Nor would a neighbor notice that weak woman

  13. أتصغينَ؟لا صوتَ غيرُ الضَّجيج

    وغيرُ اختلاج الكؤوسِ المُطيفَةْ

    Are you listening? No sound but the noise

    And clinking of roaming cups

  14. فقد أصبحَتْ رؤيةُ الباكياتِ

    لطولِ اعتيادِ المآسي أليفَةْ

    For seeing crying women has become

    Familiar from prolonged tragedy

  15. تخافين ماذا؟ على أي شيءٍ

    تضنِّين؟ أصبحتِ أنتِ المخيفَةْ

    What do you fear? For what thing

    Do you grieve? You have become frightening

  16. فلَمْ يبقَ شيءٌ عزيزٌ لديكِ

    أضَعتِ العَفافَ ووجْهَ العفيفَةْ

    For nothing precious remains with you

    You lost chastity and the face of the chaste

  17. على بابِ (كسري) رميتِ الجبينَ

    وأسلمْتِ نهديْكِ يومَ (السَّقيفَةْ)

    At the door of (Khosrow) you flung your forehead

    And on the day of (al-Saqifah) surrendered your breasts

  18. وبعْتِ أخيرآ لحَي (تُبَّع)

    وأهدابَ (أروى) وثغرَ (الشَّريفَةْ)

    And finally sold yourself in the alley of (Tu'ba)

    The eyebrows of (Arwa) and the mouth of the (Noble)

  19. أتُعطيكِ (واشنطنُ) اليومَ وجهاً؟

    خُذي.. حسناً جرِّبي كلِّ جِيفَةْ

    Does (Washington) give you a face today?

    Take it.. Good, try every rotten thing

  20. فقد تُلفتينَ بهذا السُّقوطِ

    كأخبارِ مُنتحرٍ في صحيفَةْ

    For with this downfall, you may attract notice

    Like news of a suicide in a newspaper

  21. أصنعا، ولكنْ متى تأنفينَ

    يقولونَ: قد كُنتِ يوماً مُنيفَةْ

    What to do, but when will you recoil

    They say: you were once comfortable

  22. متى منكِ تمضينَ عَجْلى إليكِ؟

    ترينَ اخضرارَ الحياةِ النَّظيفَةْ

    When will you swiftly return to yourself?

    To see the greenness of clean life

  23. أمِنْ قلبِ أُغنيَةٍ ِمِنْ دموع

    ستأتينَ..؟ أَمْ مِنْ حنايا قذيفَةْ

    Will you come from the heart of a song of tears..?

    Or from the trajectory of a missile?
