1. في هجعة الليل المخيف الشاتي

    والجو يحلم بالصباح الآتي

    In the gloom of the fearful night,

    And the atmosphere dreaming of the coming dawn,

  2. والريح كالمحموم تهذي والدجى

    في الأفق أشباحٌ من الإنصات

    And the mad, raving wind, and the darkness on the horizon,

    Apparitions of listening,

  3. والشهب أحلامٌ معلقة على

    أهداب تمثالٍ من الظلمات

    And meteors - suspended dreams,

    On the eyelids of a statue of darkness,

  4. والطيف يخبط في السكينة مثلما

    تتخبط الأوهام في الشبهات

    And the specter pounding into the stillness,

    As delusions pound into doubts.

  5. والظلمة الخرسا تلعثم بالرؤى

    كتلعثم المخنوق بالكلمات

    The mute darkness stammers with visions,

    Like the choked man stammers with words.

  6. في ذلك الليل المخيف مضى فتىً

    قلق الثياب مروع الخطوات

    In that fearful night a young man passed by,

    Restless in his clothes, frightened in his steps.

  7. يمشي وينظر خلفه وأمامه

    نظر الجبان إلى المغير العاتي

    He walks looking behind and in front of him

    With the look of a coward toward a raging enemy.

  8. ويرى الحتوف إذا تلفت أو رنا

    ويحس أصداءً بلا أصوات

    And he sees the ridges if he turns or makes a sound,

    And he feels echoes without voices.

  9. ويعود يسأل نفسه ما خيفتي؟

    ماذا أحس؟ وأين أين ثباتي؟

    And he asks himself again what frightened me?

    What did I feel? And where is my composure?

  10. ماذا يخوفني أنا رجل السرى؟

    وأنا رفيق الليل والفلوات

    What frightens me, I the man of the journeys?

    And I, the friend of night and the wilds?

  11. هل ليلتي غير الليال؟ أم أنا

    غيري... أكاد الآن انكر ذاتي

    Is my night different from other nights? Or am I

    Different from myself... I almost deny my own self now!

  12. أين الصباح وأين مني قريتي؟

    والرعب قدامي وفي لفتاتي

    Where is the dawn and where is my village from me?

    And terror is ahead of me and in my glances.

  13. وهنا تراءت للمروع عصبةٌ

    كالذعر شيطانية اللمحات

    And there appeared to the frightened man a gang,

    Demonic in their sudden glimpses.

  14. شعثٌ كأهل الكهف إلا أن في

    نظراتهم همجية الشهوات

    Disheveled like the People of the Cave, except

    There is savagery of lusts in their glances.

  15. وتقلبت مقل العصابة في الفتى

    وكأنها تشويه بالنظرات

    And that gang flipped around the young man,

    As if disfiguring him with their stares.

  16. وتخيلت “كيس النقود” فأبرقت

    رغباتها في الأعين الشرهات

    They imagined the "money bag" so their

    Greed sparked in their rapacious eyes.

  17. وتململت فيها الشراسة مثلما

    يتململ الزلزال في الهضبات

    And brutality stirred in them as tremors stir

    In the mountain peaks.

  18. والتاع فيها الشر فانهالت على

    ذاك الفتى بالضرب والطعنات

    And evil brewed in them so they attacked

    That young man with blows and stabs.

  19. فاستل خنجره وكسر وحده

    وحشية الوثبات بالوثبات

    So he drew his dagger and alone

    Repelled the savagery of their leaps with leaps.

  20. وتلفتت تلك العصابة حولها

    فرأت بعين الوهم ظل سراة

    And that gang looked around it

    And in delusion saw the shadow of thieves.

  21. وهناك لاذت بالفرار وأدبرت

    ملعونة الروحات والغدوات

    So there they fled in disarray,

    Cursed in spirits and actions.

  22. وغدت يصادم بعضها بعضاً كما

    تتصادم الآلات بالآلات

    And they collided with each other as

    Machines collide with machines.

  23. وجثا الفتى بين الجراح كمدنفٍ

    يستنجد العواد بالزفرات

    And the young man fell between wounds like a minaret

    Calling the times for help with moans.

  24. وتلكأت عند التوجع روحه

    بين الممات وبين نصف حياة

    His soul wavered between death and half a life

    In the throes of agony.

  25. وامتد في حضن الطريق وداؤه

    حي وصفرته من الأموات

    And he sprawled on the road and his wounds

    Bled while his face yellowed like the dead.

  26. وتداعت الأوجاع فيه والتظت

    فيه الجراح الحمر كالجمرات

    And pains gathered in him, and gashes

    Burned in him like embers.

  27. وإذا تهيأ للنهوض تثاءبت

    فيه الجراح تثاؤب الحيات

    And when he tried to get up, his wounds

    Yawned in him with the yawns of snakes.

  28. وعلى يمين الدرب كوخٌ تلتقي

    في صدره النكبات بالنكبات

    And to the right of the road, a shack whose

    Misfortunes meet with misfortunes in its chest.

  29. بين القصور وبينه ميلٌ وما

    أدنى المكان وأبعد الرحمات!

    A mile away from the palaces, yet how

    Near is the place and far the mercies!

  30. يشكو إلى جيرانه فيصمهم

    عنه ضجيج القصف واللذات

    He complains to its neighbors but they are deafened

    From him by the clamor of bombings and pleasures.

  31. كوخ إذا خطرت به ريح الدجى

    أومى إلى السكان بالرعشات

    A shack, if the night breeze stirs it,

    It signals its residents with tremors.

  32. “سنوات يوسف” عمره وجداره

    آبداً تنوءبأعجف السنوات

    "The years of Joseph" are its age and its wall,

    Bent for eternity by the years.

  33. فيه العجوز وبنتها وغلامها

    يتذكرون موارد الأقوات

    In it are an old woman, her daughter and her son

    Remembering the sources of livelihood.

  34. فالحقل جدبٌ ظامىءٌ وسماؤه

    صحوٌ تلوح كصفحة المرآة

    The field is barren, parched, and its sky

    Is sober, appearing like a mirror's surface.

  35. والأغنياء، وهل ترق قلوبهم؟

    لا ، إنها أقسى من الصخرات

    And the rich - do their hearts soften?

    No! They are harder than boulders.

  36. وتغلغوا في الصمت فانتبهوا على

    شبحٍ ينادي الصمت بالأنات

    And they whispered in silence, then noticed

    A specter calling out silence with moans.

  37. فإذا فتىً قلق الملامح يختفي

    تحت الجراح الحمر والخفقات

    And there was an anxious young man hiding

    Under bloody, fluttering wounds.

  38. فمشى ثلاثتهم إليه وانثنوا

    بالضيف بين الدمع والآهات

    So the three of them went to him and leaned

    Over the guest with tears and laments.

  39. وروى لهم خبر العصابة أنها

    سدت عليه الدرب بالهجمات

    And he told them the story of the gang, that it

    Had blocked his way with attacks.

  40. وتهيجت فيه الجراح فصدها

    وتسترت بالليل كالحشرات

    And rage boiled in him so he repelled them

    And they hid in the night like insects.

  41. فدنت فتاة الكوخ تمسح وجهه

    وتبلسم الأجراح بالدعوات

    The shack girl approached, wiping his face,

    And soothing the wounds with prayers.

  42. وتبل من دمه يديها إنها

    تشتم فيه أعبق النفحات

    And her hands were stained with his blood - she

    Smells in it the most fragrant scents.

  43. وترى به ما ليس تدري هل ترى

    سر القضا؟ أم آية الآيات

    And she sees in him what she knows not - does she see

    The secret of fate? Or a verse of verses?

  44. فإذا الجراح تنام فيه ويشتفي

    ويرد عمراً كان وشك فوات

    For the wounds fell asleep in him, and he recovered

    And regained a life that was almost lost.

  45. وإزاءه البنت الجميلة كلها

    روح سماويٌ وطهر صلاة

    And before him the beautiful girl, all

    Spirit heavenly and ritual purity.

  46. يتجاوب الإغراء في كلماتها

    كتجاوب الأوتار بالنغمات

    Temptation resonates in her words

    Like the resonance of strings with melodies.

  47. أغفى الجريح على السكون وأغمضت

    أجفان من حوليه كف سبات

    The wounded one fell asleep in tranquility and the eyelids

    Of those around him closed in a swoon.

  48. والكوخ في حرق الأسى مترقبٌ

    بشرى ترف عليه كالزهرات

    And the shack, burning in agony, awaited

    Good news to float to it like flowers.

  49. والليل تمثالٌ سجينٌ يرتجي

    فك القيود على يد النحات

    And the night, a prisoner statue, praying

    To break its shackles at the sculptor's hand.

  50. فبدا احمرار في الظلام كأنه

    لعنات حقدٍ في وجوه طغاة

    Then a redness appeared in the darkness, as if

    Curses of hatred on the faces of tyrants.

  51. وتسلل السحر البليل على الربى

    كالحلم بين الصحو والغفوات

    And sorcery sneaked upon the plateau

    Like a dream between alertness and slumber.

  52. بندى وينثر في البقاع أريجه

    ويرش درب الفجر بالنسمات

    Dew! Strewing its fragrance in the land

    And sprinkling the dawn’s path with breezes.

  53. وصبت على الجبل الشموخ أشعةٌ

    مسحورةٌ كطفولة القبلات

    And enchanted rays poured over the lofty mountain

    As if it were a king shaking dawn like banners.

  54. فكأنما الجبل المعمم بالسنى

    ملك يهز الفجر كالرايات

    It lifted its forehead to the heights so lights

    Tossed in its head like waves.

  55. رفع الجبين إلى العلا فتقلبت

    في رأسه الأضواء كالموجات

    And it climbed the distant horizon in its loftiness

    Where you see its turban of halos.

  56. وتسلق الأفق البعيد شموخه

    فترى عمامته من الهالات

    And rosy smiles glittered over the slopes

    Pink of breath and smiles.

  57. وتلألأت فوق السفوح مباسمٌ

    وردية الأنفاس والبسمات

    And the tide of dawn poured as if

    It were the flame of prophecy in the hands of guides.

  58. وانصب تيار الشروق كأنه

    شعل النبوة في أكف هداة

    And it invaded the roads so their bandits

    Fled, their faces blushing from the slaps.

  59. وغزا الدروب فأجفلت قطاعها

    ووجوههم تحمر بالصفعات

    And that gang shouted: What do I see?

    Are these shining lands my enemies?

  60. وتصايحت تلك العصابة ما أرى؟

    هذي الجهات المشرقات عداتي

    Where is escape? And where can I seek refuge,

    And the light emanates from all sides?

  61. أين المفر؟ وأين أطلب مهرباً؟

    والنور يسطع من جميع جهاتي

    How to flee when I have no cave or path -

    Oh my misery! Oh the evil of my death!

  62. كيف الفرار؟ وليس لي كهف ولا

    درب فيا لي!! يا لسوء مماتي!

    And the shack people awoke when specks

    Flickered into their sight with flashes.

  63. وأفاق أهل الكوخ حين ثقوبه

    تومي إلى الأبصار بالومضات

    So the three approached to see their wounded one -

    And there was the young man in the joy of bliss!

  64. فدنا ثلاثتهم يرون جريحهم

    فإذا الفتى في سكرة الفرحات

    He shook off sleep and his wounds gripped him,

    And he greeted the world with strong will.

  65. نفض النعاس وشد فيه جراحه

    واستقبل الدنيا بعزم أباة

    And he threw some money into the hand of the boy and his mother,

    With a blessing prayer.

  66. ورمى إلى كف الغلام وأمه

    بعض النقود ودعوة البركات

    And he poured into the hand of the girl, and said:

    “Najwa”, take the choice of weddings, and come!

  67. وصبا إلى كف الفتاة وقال: يا

    “نجوى” خذي نخب الزفاف وهاتي

    And he folded his wounds, and went to lead the years,

    And give good news to the shacks of bounties.

  68. وطوى الجراح وهب يقتاد السنى

    ويبشر الأكواخ بالخيرات

    And he leads a history, and his steps plant

    A dawn that illuminates the paths of leaders.

  69. ويقود تاريخاً وينبت خطوه

    فجراً ينير مسالك القادات

    The morning exposed the criminals so they became

    News of a crime in the mouths of curses.

  70. فضح الصباح المجرمين فأصبحوا

    أخبار جرمٍ في فم اللعنات

    And the shacks rose - their people placing

    “The Cave of Victory” in their motives.

  71. وتعالت الأكواخ تنظر أهلها

    يضعون “غار النصر” في الهامات

    Spring touched their hearts and fields

    So they flourished with good news and fruits.

  72. لمس الربيع قلوبهم وحقولهم

    فاخضوضرت بالبشر والثمرات

    And the atmosphere casts light into the world

    As floods cast the slopes of hills.

  73. والجو يلقي النور في الدنيا: كما

    تلقي السيول مناكب الربوات

    And flowers in the weakness of youth blossom

    Over branches like the eyes of young women.

  74. والزهر في وهن الشباب مفتحٌ

    فوق الغصون كأعين الفتيات

    And the horizon greens with rays and dew

    And the earth frolics in the jewelry of plants.

  75. والأفق يورق بالأشعة والندى

    والأرض تمرح في حلي نبات

    And here the role of crimes ended and began

    An era of countryside shadowed like gardens.

  76. وهنا انتهى دور الجرائم وابتدى

    دورٌ وريف الظل كالجنات

    So the brothers gathered after separation

    And the family became one after diaspora.

  77. فتجمع الإخوان بعد تفرقٍ

    وانضم شمل الأهل بعد شتات

    An awakening stronger than terror and forces

    Vanquished the falsehoods of sorcery.

  78. صرعت أباطيل الدجنة يقظةٌ

    أقوى من الإرهاب والقوات

    And fraud goes like estrangement - and nothing lasts

    Except truth above every rebel.

  79. والدجل يذهب كالجفاء ولم تدم

    إلا الحقيقة فوق كل عتاة

    Life is sorrows emptying into

    A wedding, and joys into regrets.

  80. إن الحياة مآتم تفضي إلى

    عرسٍ وأفراحٌ إلى حسرات

    But with its autumn, winter, and summer,

    It is a judgment and lesson of sermons.

  81. لكنها بخريفها وشتائها

    وبصيفها... حكمٌ ودرس عظات

    So choose whatever purpose for life's journey -

    Truth is the ultimate purpose.

  82. فاختر لسير العمر أية غايةٍ

    إن الحقيقة غاية الغايات
