1. يا صمت ما أحناك لو تستطيع

    تلفّني، أو أنني أستطيع

    O silence, how I wish you could

    Wrap me, or that I could

  2. لكن شيئاً داخلي يلتظي

    فيخفق الثلج، ويظمى الربيع

    But something inside me seethes

    So the snow flutters, and spring smolders

  3. يبكي، يغني، يجتدي سامعاً

    وهو المغنّي والصدى والسميع

    It cries, sings, rants listening

    It’s the singer, the echo, the hearer

  4. يهذي فيجثو الليل في أضلعي

    يشوي هزيعاً، أو يدميَّ هزيع

    It raves so night crouches in my ribs

    Scorching decrepit, or bleeding the frail

  5. وتطبخُ الشهبُ رماد الضحى

    وتطحن الريحُ عشايا الصقيع

    The stars cook dawn’s ashes

    And the wind grinds the frost of dusk

  6. ويلهث الصبحُ كمهجورة

    يجتاح نهديها خيالُ الضجيع

    And morning pants like an abandoned woman

    Whose dreams invade her breasts

  7. شيء يناغي، داخلي يشتهي

    يزقو، يدوًّي، كالزحام الفظيع

    Something murmurs, inside me craves

    It shrieks, it moans, like a monstrous din

  8. يدعو، كما يدعو نبي، بلا

    وعي، وينجر انجرار الخليع

    It calls, like a prophet in a trance

    And drags like a debauched man

  9. فيغتلي خلف ذبولي فتى

    ويجتدي شيخ، ويبكي رضيع

    So a lad lurks behind my bloom

    And an old man rants, and an infant weeps

  10. يجوع حتى الصيف ينسى الندى

    ميعاده، يهمي شهيق النجيع

    It starves until summer forgets

    Its tryst, and the sleeper's sigh swoops

  11. ويركض الوادي، وتحبو الربى

    ويهرب المرعى، ويعيا القطيع

    And the valley dashes, the hills teem

    The pasture flees, and the flock bleats

  12. ما ذلك الحمل الذي يحتسي

    خفقي، ويعصي ذاهلاً أو يطيع

    What is that burden that drinks my

    Throbbing, heedless obeying or not?

  13. يشدو فترتد ليالي الصبا

    فجراً عنيداً، أو أصيلاً وديع

    It sings so the nights of youth

    Return to defiant dawn, or gentle calm

  14. وتحبل الأطياف تجني الرؤى

    ويولد الآتي ويحيا الصريع

    Visions reap dreams, the unborn lives

    And the dead awakens, the ruined thrives

  15. فتبتدي الأشتات في أحرفي

    ولادة فرحى، وحملا وجيع

    So the fragments begin in my letters

    A joyous birth, a burden, and pain

  16. هذه الحروف الضائعات المدى

    ضيعت فيها العمر، كي لا تضيع

    These aimless, endless letters

    Wherein my life was lost, lest it be lost

  17. ولست فيما جئته تاجراً

    أُحسُّ ما أشريوماذا أبيع

    And I’m not among what I came

    A merchant, though I feel, I see, I sell

  18. إليكما يا قارئي انها،

    على مآسيها: عَذاب بديع

    To you, my readers, they are

    With all their sorrows: exquisite torment
