This is your morning, its light the Revelation; you are the Prophet sent to humankind, a messenger. Through you the world shines and the heavens rejoice; how radiant are grove and thicket! God is greatest; your Lord’s light is loveliest, an abundant outpouring revealed in hearts. The sun of truth shines at its height, a noble light enduring through time. The verses are recited and the angels behold; beauty inclines toward beauty. The miracle of the Creator of all beings is speech made everlasting in eloquence. Ask me about the Chosen One with fitting courtesy: he bore the message, with the Qur’an as guide. This Chosen One is of paradise’s soil, a mercy to all worlds, virtuous. Behold how blessed is the Lord of this radiant vision; whoever denies the dawn is utterly blind. He came from Abraham’s line, pure and unblemished, walking the earth. His Lord bestowed upon him the qualities of perfection in abundance. Say what you wish in his praise: he is Ahmad, complete in beauty and noble; patient under harm, proud, brave in battle. How much darkness ruled before him: a stone was trusted, and earth heaped up; a god made of sweets was suddenly eaten. How feeble such a god! People were drunk, manners grew coarse, swords struck first, and blood flowed. Who could cover the shame of that foolish age, when forbearance went astray? The wars of Dahis and al-Ghabra were their pride, with blood spilling on the sand and cries of grief. Burying girls was called virtue, while their lives brought weary shame upon faces. Alas for an age of claws, grudges, and raiding horses that charged at dawn! Free women became captives taken away, their bodies sold for prostitution. Who would restore sound judgment to people and reunite their scattered bonds? A new community, a path and a way: he is the hoped-for new dawn, and morning is beautiful when it breaks. The dawn and daylight are yours, Muhammad; night has departed and the stars are fading. God is one Lord, and Muhammad is the messenger, the seal of the noble prophets. He calls to goodness throughout the world: people are upright in their original nature; rich and poor are equal, and believers are brothers and kin. Those guided by the radiant light grew disciplined, and minds sought a new horizon. The crude rejected plain truth, and the ignorant doubted the true faith. A reckless faction plotted a dreadful day when the Messenger would be killed. What foolish planning! How could what the Merciful has established perish? Gabriel guards him, angels surround him, and God is the best guardian. You are divinely supported: how could you be defeated when God is your protector? You were aided by great dread; Khosrow fell, then the Caesars, and thrones became ruins. On the day you conquered Mecca, the defiant chiefs were defeated and their remnants made peace. Leaders, young men, and elders all gathered beneath your banner. You strove against those who associated partners with God until they believed; Quraysh, your rugged heights became plains. Life under the Prophet’s protection was pure, serene, happy, wholesome, and beautiful. Messenger of God, I come to you complaining of widespread turmoil and scarce clarity. Truth can scarcely speak, laws are bound, and error prevails under the law of the jungle. The thirsty earth remains sick, and evil is active upon it. People still worship their calves; light is slow while darkness hastens. Wars follow one another, sacred things are defiled, and your people’s blood flows in torrents. Destruction has seized the middle community, and the mouth of the age utters sickly guesses. Help, Messenger of God; you can reach me, for refreshment is with you and the clouds pour rain. Save those under your protection: sorrow has assailed them, the wind scatters dust, and the call to arms beats like drums. Grant gracious pardon and protection, Prophet; I wait at the Generous One’s door. Yours is intercession before an interceding Lord, and through you I seek acceptance. May God bless you, pure light; blessing the Messenger is a fundamental practice.
