And I have verses of poetry, set to music
by the instruments of enchantment; and the title: a divan.
I poured into it love’s whispers, enraptured,
drunken; upon each of its letters is a devil.
I drew in it passion’s statues as an idol,
and in love there are no idols or graven images:
،
a lovely face, and a soft, radiant cheek;
a woman, and yet she is solace and sweet basil.
،
So, for her beauty, were it not for God, he would almost worship her—
Buddha; and one human may worship another.
