1. ألمّت بنا أهلا وسهلا بها سل ما

    هداها إلى أبناء مظلمة سلمى

    She greeted us a warm welcome, inquiring

    What guided her to the sons of dark Salma.

  2. ألمّت هدُوّاً والمحَيّا سراجُها

    ولا بدر يهديها إلينا ولا نجما

    She lit up the way, her lamp illuminating,

    With neither moon nor stars to guide her to us.

  3. قد استخبرت عنا الدجى وهو منكر

    فيا عظم ما لاقت وما قول يا عظما

    The darkness was asked of us but denied knowing,

    Oh, the tribulation! The denial so bold!

  4. سرَت دونها بيدٌ يبيد بها القطى

    وان خاضها الخريت من هولها سمّى

    By her hand the hills were made barren,

    And if fates had crossed her, they'd be filled with dread.

  5. نحت بإزا ذات التساقُط نحلاً

    فلا جرس منهم حيث ناموا ولا جسما

    She sculpted with determination statues

    That had no sound where they slept, no body.

  6. ثملنا كحسو الطير من شهدة الكرى

    ولم يشف دانا غير باردها الألمى

    Like birds drunk on the nectar of vines

    That only her touch could relieve our suffering.

  7. فلما تولّى النومُ حلما وجدت ذا

    فقلت إذاًياليتهُ لم يكن حلما

    When sleep brought dreams, I found her

    And said: would that it were not a dream!

  8. وما هيَ إلّا ظبيةٌ خاذلٌ أدما

    هواها قلوب العاشقين لها أدمى

    She was but a gazelle, so shy,

    Whose love filled the hearts of those who loved her.

  9. سوى أنّها ريا الدماليج والبُرى

    سوى أنّها عجزاءُ أو أنّها جمّا

    Except she was a doe of dunes and grasslands,

    Except she was helpless, except she was perfect.

  10. سوى أن ريق النوم منها سلاك عن

    نوافح لُبنا والسلاف بما الصما

    The saliva of sleep flowed from her,

    Caressing our cheeks, slick greetings to the deaf.

  11. فنال بفيها الثغر ما كان يشتهى

    مذاقا ونال الأنف ما يشتهى شمّا

    So her lips got what they craved,

    And her nose got the scent that it desired.

  12. فيا عجباَ أنّى تجود ودأبها

    تضِنُّ بنزر القول من خوفها الإثما

    How strange that she's so generous

    Yet so frugal with words fearing sin.

  13. إلى بُخلها قد ضمّت الجبنَ والونى

    ثلاثَ خصالٍ نكسبُ المدح والذّمّا

    To her stinginess she added cowardice and frailty,

    Three traits that bring praise or blame.

  14. مهاةٌ رأت شمسَ الضحى من جبينها

    سنى الشمس والظلماء من فرعها الظلما

    A belle who saw the dawn sun on her brow,

    The sun's radiance and the darkness of her tresses.

  15. مهاةٌ لها جسمٌ لطيفٌ ومنطقٌ

    رخيمٌ فلو شاءت به حطّت العصما

    A belle with delicate body and gentle speech,

    She could, if she wished, bring down the virtuous.

  16. تجاهد في قتل النفوس وأسرها

    ولا عقل للقتلى لديها ولا رحمى

    She battles to kill souls and capture them,

    No mind remains for her victims, no mercy.

  17. ألا ليت شعري كيف نومةُ عاشقٍ

    وقد حمّ من بين الحبيبة ما حمّا

    Oh, I wonder how a lover can sleep

    When the beloved has vanished into the night.

  18. وكيف أبيت ليلة لا تعودني

    همومي كما عبد الذي يشتكى الحمى

    How can I spend a night and not be haunted

    By worries, as one plagued with fever?

  19. وهل رعت الحسناء عهدي وإن تخن

    فكم من قديم خانهُ نسوةٌ قدما

    Did the beauty keep her promise or betray me,

    As many women of old betrayed men?

  20. لئن أنكرتني البيض وهي عوارفٌ

    وما راعها شيبٌ على مفرقي عمّا

    If the whites* forsake me, though they know me well,

    Unhindered that my parting hair is gray.

  21. إلى كلّ زير ملن عنّي وعن مدى

    مرامي حتى صرن يدعونني عما

    All who followed me, my ways and goals,

    Have abandoned me, calling me blind.

  22. لقد كنت قيد النور منها وكلّما

    شكوتُ سقاماً قلنَ واسقم واسقما

    Once I was bound by her light, and whenever

    I complained of illness, they said: be sicker!

  23. يصخنَ إذا ناديت يدنون إن ألح

    تراهُنّ عميا عن جميع الورى صمّا

    They hiss if I call, come close if I persist,

    Yet I see they're blind to all people, deaf.

  24. تجاوب إن ناديتُ عزة بثنة

    وأسماء عن ليلى وزينب عن أسما

    They answer if I call honor, coyness,

    Asma over Laila, Zainab over Asma,

  25. وخولة عن لبنى ولبنى تجيب عن

    سعاد وعن سعدى وحفصةُ عن سلمى

    Khaulah over Lubna, and Lubna answers

    Over Saada, and Saadiyah over Salma.

  26. وهندٌ تمنّت ما تلا يا الندا اسمها

    ودعدٌ تمنّت أن يكون لها يا اسما

    Hind wished the caller would say her name,

    And Dauad wished a caller would call her name.

  27. وقولي منَ الأقوال فيهنَ مرتضىً

    وفعلي من الأفعال واسمى من الأسما

    I say my words some are satisfactory,

    My deeds and name are names, marks sublime.

  28. ولكنّما جهلي بحلم طردته

    وما ضرّ جهلٌ بعدهُ خلّفَ الحلما

    But my ignorance drove wisdom away,

    And nothing makes up for wisdom lost.

  29. كفاني فقد البيض حتّى حديثها

    محادثتي غُرّ الوجوهِ أو الشما

    It's enough that the whites forsook me, for even

    Conversing with them soured faces and feelings.

  30. تسنّمنَ بالآباء ذروةَ شامخ

    من المجد والآباء بالمنزل الأسمى

    They ascended to the peak of glory,

    And glory's abode, through their fathers.

  31. وليسَت توازي الشمّ حلم حليمهم

    ولا علمَ إلّا قد أحاطوا به علما

    Their dreams can't compare to the vision of the wise,

    Their knowledge encompasses all knowledge.

  32. فلا رفع بل لا خفض إلّا لديهم

    ولا نصب في أيدي سواهم ولا جزما

    No elevation, abasement but by them,

    No syntax but theirs, nothing governed or bound.

  33. فتابى الفتاوى غيرهم فسواهم

    من الناس لا فتوى لديه ولا حكما

    The issuing of edicts by others is injustice,

    As they have no edicts or rulings to make.

  34. وإن حاروا أو سالموا من نواهم

    تكن حربهم حربا وسلمُهُم سلما

    Whether they war or make peace,

    Their war is just and their peace a peace.

  35. أولئكَ قومٌ لا يسومون مسلما

    بظلم ولا يخشون من أحدٍ ظلما

    Such people never wrong a Muslim soul,

    They fear no injustice from anyone.

  36. كأنّهم يعنون بالمدح كلّهِ

    ولا سيماً بيتاً أراهُ لهم وسما

    As if they seek praise in full,

    I find no verse in which they are named.

  37. ومن يغترب منا ويخضعَ نُأوه

    ولم يخش ظلما ما أقام ولا هضما

    Whoever turns from us and is humbled,

    And fears no injustice when settled or exiled,

  38. أناسٌ ترى مكروهَهُم لاتّباعهم

    سنا الدين ممنوعاً ومندوبهم حتما

    Are people who see their prohibitions

    As law, their compulsions as duties bound.

  39. فكم أنكر السباق من هو مقعد

    وكم أنكرَت شمسَ الضحى مقلةُ الأعمى

    How many who can't mount reject the race,

    How many blind to the dawn sun deny its light.

  40. حلفتُ بعيديّات شعث حجيجهم

    ولم يبق منها السيرُ شحما ولا لحما

    I swear by the disheveled pilgrims,

    Of them no fat or meat remains.

  41. برتها مبارة المطيّ إذا البرى

    تمجّ عليها الشمس من ريقها سما

    Their camels are worn by miles and sun

    Their clothing bleached by the drool become white.

  42. فتُبلى الدجى ثوبا وفرعا تشيبه

    بخضب السنا والآل تسبحهُ يمّا

    On them are vessels that once determined, marched on

    No drawn sword could match their resolve.

  43. عليها الالي كانوا إذا صمّموا مضوا

    فلا الصارم الصمصام يحكيهم عزما

    When we camp, the houses of Banu Fla

    Become the letter meem, their eyes the letter ain**.

  44. إذا ما الهوَينا قد أنامت بني الفلا

    يكونُ الكرى ميماً وأجفانهم علما

    Never did their fathers part from them,

    Umm Ubaid was ever their mother.

  45. لهم قطّ لم يبرح أبو مالك أبا

    وأم عبيد لم تزل لهم أمّا

    They sought goodness and were softened

    By memories of Muhammad and Abu Bakr,

  46. فأسلاهم الأشياء ذكر محمّد

    وذكر أبي بكر وذكرهُم عثمان

    And memories of Uthman and of them all.

    For its scent in their dwelling the musk they hoarded.

  47. تمَنّوا منى من طيب طيبة عندهُم

    فزمّوا لها الكوماء والبازل الضخما

    Excellent! My defiant people, yes excellent!

    Yes, most excellent, their giving and nobility.

  48. لنعم أباة الضيم قومي وحبّذا

    وبا حبّذا فيهمُ تَقِلّ ويا نعما

    The honored elders of Banu Ali

    Grew within them, no Ali but them thrives.

  49. وقد أصحب المرد الجحاجح من بني

    عليّ ولا علياء إلا لهم تنمى

    Among them are those of generous palms and minds so wise,

    Those courageous of soul when destiny frowns.

  50. فمنهم جوادُ الكفّ والفهمُ ثاقبٌ

    ومنهم شجاع النفس إن عنّت الدهما

    Among them is one whose words are few, a composer

    Of descriptions of those whose virtue was perfect.

  51. ومنهم فتىً نزرُ الكلام ومنشدٌ

    شمائل من لم تشك أعراضهم كلما

    The wellspring of pens, his ink their rain,

    At times flowing, at times gathering.

  52. وموردُ أقلام لحبر دواته

    فآونةً تروى وءاونةً تظما

    Adorning them the whites*** of the proud steeds,

    No polished sword but desires their inscription.****

  53. يحلّى بها بيض الطروس جواهراً

    فلا مهرُقٌ إلّا بها يشتهي الرقما

    Meanings are not lost to them,

    No "or", no "as", no "indeed", no "then".

  54. فما أنكرت حتى المعاني عنهم

    ولا أو ولا أمّا ولا أم ولا ثما

    No "is it", no "but", no sisters thereof,

    No "that", no "never", no "if only", no "as if".

  55. ولا أي ولا لكن ولا أخواتها

    ولا أن ولا كلّا ولا لم ولا لما

    They master grammar, immersed in its sea,

    From them comes no lesson that gives you insight.

  56. يميلون نحو النحو يفشون مرّه

    فلا حفظ عنهم يطّبيك ولا فهما

    They discourse on the complexities easily unraveled,

    Discourse on "if only" and "or" and "indeed".

  57. يخوضون في مهما أمهما بسيطةٌ

    يخوضون في لولا وفي أم وفي أما

    Sometimes on the poetry of vagabonds,

    One reciting "it was long," another "is it that?"

  58. يخوضون في شعر الصعاليك تارةً

    فذا منشدٌ طال وذا هل ما

    And another, "it became mixed," and one reciting "or

    did the heart forget Salma?"

  59. وذا منشدٌ بان الخليط ومنشدٌ أم

    ن أمّ أوفى أو صحا القلب عن سلمى

    And one, "she from whom it excites me", and one,

    "morning you floated high the water,"

  60. وذاك التي منها يهيّجني وذا

    طحا والتي منها غداة طفت ع الما

    They discourse on Al-A'sha and Ghalyan Myah,

    On Hassaan and Ibn Abi Salma they discourse.

  61. يخوضون في الأعشى وغيلان مية

    يخوضون في حسّان وابن أبي سلمى

    And sometimes on he who crafted "she visited

    upon the cheeks the darkness spreads." *****

  62. وطورا إلى من صاغ زارت على أو

    لواشي التي منها سرى يخبط الظلما

    And sometimes on elder Sayyidi****** and his son,

    And sometimes on Sayyid Abdullah, and sometimes Harma.*******

  63. وآونةً في الشيخ سيديّ وابنه

    وفي سيد عبد اللّه طورا وفي حرما

    And sometimes on Ibnul Husayn,******** and on Abu

    Ali,********* and on Ash-Shami,******** or on Abu Tamam.********

  64. وآونةً في ابن الحسين وفي أبي

    عليّ وفي الشامي أو في أبي تمّاما
