وقد أبرزت مني الحروبُ مُجَرِّباً

صليباً على وَقع الحروب مُشَيّعا

The wars have proven my endurance

A cross to the impact of wars, attending

جموحاً إذا لم أرض شيئاً تركتُه

صبوراً إذا ما لم أجد لي مَجزعا

Unruly, if I do not please anything I leave it

Patience if I do not find a refuge for me

وما سَوَّلَت نفسي لي السلم إذ بَدَت

نَواجِذُها يَقطُرنَ سُمّاً مسلّعا

My soul did not make peace for me when

Its fangs dripping with poison appear adorned

ولا كنتُ مِمَّن أَرَّثَ الشَرَّ بينهم

ولا حين جَدَّ الجِدُّ مِمَّن تَخَشَّعا

Nor was I one who sowed evil among them

Nor when adversity came, was I one who was submissive

وليس أخو الحرب المضرَّةِ بالذي

إذا ضغمتهُ جاء للسلم أخضَعا

And the brother of harmful war is not one

Who, when oppressed, comes to peace, submitting

ولكن أخوها كلُّ شاكٍ سلاحه

إذا حملته فوق حالٍ تشجَّعا

But the brother of war is everyone whose weapon

When she carries him, he is encouraged

وإن التقى خير المتاع فإنما

نصيب الفتى من ماله ما تمتَّعا

And if the best goods meet, so only

The youth's share of his money is what he enjoyed
