To Oman I was called back

And yearning’s caravan walks in my stead

Inspire me, O poetry’s rhymes, with an effusion

That emulates a beloved exiled from me

At the roof of the flood my she-camel knelt down

So I quenched my joy—fires in me

With the brand of dawn appeared as wishes

    Mountains harboring places of rest

As narcissi in the lips of tumuli

The fragrance wafts from it in a stream

And in Amman the bird of love sings

Refrains echoed by the hillsides’ undulations

    O Amman set me aright

And pour your torrent into my wasteland

    Excuse my stumbling step

For this is poetry from my confusion

Some poetry from the excess of my turmoil

Some poetry from the outpouring of my rapture

If my words bow to the meter’s constraint

Then pardon my poverty of access
