أين الصفا والخلق المرتضى

حين التداني والزمان الزمان

Where is the kindness and the virtuous character

When closeness and time have passed?

وفت امام العصر من أذعنت

لامره فيما مضى الخافقان

It has gone in front of the age, submitted

To its command, the two orbits.

البر اسماعيل ذاك الذي

كان من الرحمن حقا معان

Ishmael the righteous, he who

Was truly kind from the Merciful.

من مصرها ألقت مقاليدها

اليه والهند واقصى عمان

From Egypt he took its keys

And India and the farthest Oman.

فرحمة الله على وجهه

تنهل ما دارت صروف الزمان

So may God's mercy be upon his face

As long as the turns of time revolve.

سرعان ما انسيت ذاك الصفا

والانس في تلك المغانى الحسان

How soon I forgot that kindness

And intimacy in those beautiful meanings.

سقين اياماً بتلك الربى

وذلك العهد وذاك الاوان

I spent days in that land

And that era and that time.

ما كدر الوصل وغال الوفا

وما لذاك الصدق في الود مان

When union was undisturbed and loyalty was expensive

And that sincerity in love had no defect.

متى ارى حظك يا سيدي

يسمو إِلى الافلاك يا ذا المصان

When will I see your fortune, my master,

Rise to the stars, O you of high station?

عسى الحكيم العدل في امره

الراحم الديان ذو الامتنان

Perhaps the Wise, the Just in His command,

The Merciful, the Compensator,

مدبر الأمر على ما يشا

في كل يوم منه أمر وشان

Disposer of affairs as He wills

In each day, commanding and determining,

يقضى لنا بالجمع بعد النوى

من أين لي انظركم بالعيان

Will ordain for us to reunite after separation.

How I wish to see you in person!

ودم لكسب العلم ترق العلى

حتى تنال السبق يوم الرهان

And continue seeking knowledge to ascend on high

Until you take the lead on Judgment Day.
