لَأَن فُجِّعتُ بِالقُرَباءِ مِنّى
لَقَد مُتِّعتُ بِالأَمَلِ البَعيدِ
For I have been aggrieved by the loss of loved ones,
Though I was gratified by distant hopes,
وَما تَبغي المَنِيَّةُ حينَ تَأتي
عَلى أَدنى الأَحِبِّةِ مِن مَزيدِ
And death desires no more when it arrives
Upon those dearest, to add or take away.
خُلِقنا أَنفُساً وَبَني نُفوسٍ
وَلَسنا بِالسَلامِ وَلا الحَديدِ
We fashioned souls and children of those souls,
Yet we are neither peaceful, nor tempered steel.
