فأمَّا بِلاَلٌ فإنَّ الجُذَا
مَ جَلَّلَ مَا حَازَ منهُ الوَرِيدَا
As for Bilal, truly hardship
Has adorned all that starvation has left of him.
فَأَنقَعَ فِي السَّمنِ أَوصَالَهُ
كَمَا أَنقَعَ الآدِمُونَ الثريدَا
So he dipped his limbs in butter
As leather-merchants dip leather in oil.
فأكسَدَ سَمنَ تِجَار العِرَا
قِ علينَا فَأصبَحَ فينَا كَسِيدَا
Thus he oxidised the butter of perfume-merchants against us,
And so he awoke among us like an honoured chieftain.
