سَيعلمُ دَهرِي إذ تَنكّرَ أَنّني

صَبورٌ على نُكرانِهِ غيرُ جازِعِ

My son will know when fate turns against me

That I am steadfast despite its denial, unafraid

وأَنّي أَسوسُ النَفسَ في حالِ عُسرِها

سِياسةَ راضٍ بالمعيشةِ قانعِ

And that I guide my soul in times of hardship

With the self-control of one content with his lot

كما كنتُ في حالِ اليَسار أَسوسُها

سِياسةَ عَفٍّ في الغَنى مُتواضعِ

Just as I did in times of ease -

I guided it with restraint, humble in plenty

وأَمنعُها الوِردَ الذي لا يَليقُ بي

وإن كنتُ ظمآناً بَعيدَ الشّرائعِ

And kept from it excess unfit for me

Though I was thirsty, far from water
