لَعمري لقد أَحسنتَ يا ابن المُدبّرِ
وما زلتَ في الإحسانِ عينَ المُشهّرِ
By my life, you have done nobly, O son of al-Mudabbir;
in doing good, you have ever been al-Mudabbir’s very image.
ظَرفَتَ ومَن يجمع من العلمِ مثلَ ما
جمعتَ أَبا إسحاقَ يَظرُف وَيُشهَرِ
You have shown true wit—and whoever gathers as much learning as
you have gathered, O Abu Ishaq, grows witty and renowned.
أسالت على الخدَّينِ دَمعاً لو انّهُ
من الدُّرِّ عَقدٌ كانَ ذُخراً من الذُّخرِ
You made tears flow over both cheeks; had that weeping been
a necklace of pearls, it would have been a treasure among treasures.
