يا عَذِلي قَد كُنتُ قَبلَكَ عاذِلاً
حَتّى اِبتُليتُ فَصِرتُ صَبّاً ذاهِلا
O reproacher, before you I too was once a reproacher,
until I was afflicted and became lovesick, dazed.
الحُبُّ أَوَّلُ ما يَكونُ مَجانَةً
فَإِذا تَحَكَّمَ صارَ شُغلاً شاغِلا
Love, when it first begins, is but reckless folly;
but once it takes command, it becomes an all-consuming care.
أَرضى فَيَغضَبُ قاتِلي فَتَعَجَّبوا
يَرضى القَتيلُ وَلا يُرَضّي القاتِلا
I am content, and my slayer grows angry—marvel at that!
The slain man is content, yet does not satisfy the slayer.
