لا حُزنَ إِلّا دونَ حُزنٍ نالَني
يَومَ الفِراقِ وَقَد غَدَوتُ مُوَدِّعا
There is no sorrow but it pales beside the sorrow that befell me:
the day of parting, when I went forth to bid farewell.
فَإِذا الأَحِبَّةُ قَد تَوَلَّت عيرُهُم
وَبَقيتُ فَرداً والِهاً مُتَوَجِّعا
Then suddenly, my loved ones’ caravan had turned away,
and I remained alone—distraught and aching.
