1. أَذَلُّ لِمَن أَهوى لِأُدرِكَ عِزَّةً

    وَكَم عِزَّةٍ قَد نالَها المَرءُ بِالذُلِّ

    How abject is he who loves to gain honor

    And how much honor can a man gain through abasement

  2. فَلَو كُنتُ أَسلوهُ لِسوءِ فاعِلِهِ

    لَقَد كانَ في إِقصائِهِ لي ما يُسلي

    If I were to blame it on the wrongdoer’s evil

    There would be solace for me in blaming him
