1. O people, woe to you—you have demolished

    God’s edifice and accused His servants;

  2. you have treacherously slaughtered this refined man

    and, in error, cut short his devotions.

  3. Then you wailed over him falsely—but

    that was a decree God ordained to come to pass.

  4. O mourners, gently! For who is there

    who has won his desire from treacherous Time?

  5. Do not prolong your wailing over the Naqib,

    for through slaughter he attained the highest bliss.

  6. How many a prophet, righteous man, and saint

    has died slain and won the reward of martyrdom.

  7. This has ever been the way of the noble,

    like Husayn and Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubada.

  8. This Sharif attained a grace from

    God, and in its possession equaled his forefathers.

  9. His are abundant rewards and the rank most high,

    the fairest reward from our Lord—and yet more.

  10. Bliss be his! He has taken up his abode in gardens

    of eternity—what glorious sovereignty!

  11. O my two friends, do not grieve; inscribe the date:

    “God’s decree slew him and willed it.”
