1. O sons of al-Zahra, yours is deep-rooted glory,

    And lofty honor and towering eminence;

  2. An eminence no decline can overcome,

And pride unchanged by fortune's vicissitudes.

  3. And you are the Kaaba of kindness, toward which hasten

Our hopes, and around you they circle.

  4. And from you, in every age, comes a Hashimite

Who dwells devotedly in the prayer niche of glory.

  5. And in this age of ours there has appeared

A chaste nobleman, among your most illustrious.

  6. Unique in his virtues, and yet

One man whom thousands cannot rival.

  7. O Abu Umar, I have come to you seeking refuge,

And whoever comes to you has nothing to fear.

  8. And my affair is complicated and difficult, yet

For you it is manageable, easy, and light.

  9. And I have no binding claim upon you,

Except that I am a guest in the courts of your eminence.

  10. But in your name's matching mine

Lies a subtle secret concerning what I hoped for.

  11. Both names are Abdullah, but

You surpass me in being the noble lord.

  12. And your forefather is the best of those who rode mounts,

    Merciful in his character, compassionate.

  13. So be like your virtuous forefathers, and show compassion,

For the best of people is the compassionate man of high resolve.

  14. And among the traits of the generous—and you are one of them—

Is keeping their word whenever they promise kindness.

  15. And you have long accustomed me to kindness,

And I stand at no door but yours.

  16. And your lofty resolve has raised my hopes,

So do not cut off the hope of one who seeks hospitality.

  17. And the sum of my intent is that I am devoted,

Strong in affection, yet I am weak.

  18. Grant me refuge—may God never let you suffer injustice,

Nor may deadly fates descend upon your courtyard.

  19. And take me by the hand, for I am at my wit's end,

And a frightful terror has clouded my life.
