1. For the loss of one like you, eyes weep.

    And eyelids shun sweet sleep.

  2. The untroubled one would ease your loss for us,

But how can he ease what cannot be eased?

  3. Indeed, this age has betrayed us in your loss;

So may this treacherous age be no more!

  4. Alas, my grief! How often you kept vigil through night's darkness,

And revealed the guarded secret of beauty,

  5. And made guidance clear to the seekers.

And would that you had completed what they seek!

  6. Death shot at you unawares,

And death's arrows did not miss you.

  7. We thought you would be spared to benefit humankind,

But with your death, those expectations came to nothing.

  8. For God's sake, pause a moment, that relief may come

To a heart filled with sorrows at your loss.

  9. Indeed, you set off swiftly on the night journey,

And left your family unable to comprehend.

  10. And would that you had promised them a return!

But far, far off is what they are promised.

  11. Take your time; do not depart in haste,

For your loved ones cannot bear to be without you.

  12. May clouds of favor from God be upon you,

And may a pouring raincloud drench your grave's soil.

  13. And the purest blessing be upon the Hashimite,

As long as the wind blows and branches sway.

  14. Likewise upon his family and companions, whenever they recite:

For the loss of one like you, eyes weep.
