You granted reunion after estrangement, O Hasan,
You allowed reunion after estrangement, O Beauty
And that suffering, worry, and sorrow vanished.
And that resentment, anxiety and sadness went away
And you, O my Time, when you brought him,
And you, my time, when you brought it
Adorned me with favors no other favors could match.
You gave me favors the like of which time has never given
Whatever your past fault was, it is forgiven;
Whatever sin of yours is past, is forgiven
No fault remains in you, O Time.
No fault remains with you, O time
And you, O bough, when you swayed in my homeland,
And you, O branch, when you touched my homeland
That homeland surpassed the Pleiades in glory.
It excelled the Pleiades, that homeland
Let me kiss a sandal in which you have trodden
Let me kiss the slipper that trod
My dwelling; by God, my resting-place has grown too cramped for me.
My dwellings, by God my house has become too narrow for me
And let my gaze roam free, for passion has
And allow my gaze freedom, for passion has
Lions that turn cowardly when they behold its gazelles.
Lions, when they see their cubs they become timid
And love's company consists of people whose eldest
And the party of love are folk whose chief
Is a child in love, and his strongest resolve is weakness.
In love is a child, yet his resolve is weak
By God, by God, O light of the eyes, surely
By God, by God, O light of eyes, you have
You revived a heart of mine filled with sorrow.
Revived a heart in me that is all yearning
Be as you wish, for I am infatuated with you.
Be as you wish, for I am enamored of you
All has become alike in love for you—all sorrow.
In your love all sorrow is the same to me
You are the one I desire; I cannot endure being away from you.
You are the sought and I have no patience without you
And the heart is held captive in the surges of longing.
While my heart in the depths of passion is held captive
I can never cease loving,
I can never be diverted from love ever
And how could a lovesick man, bewitched by you, forget you?
And how can one divert a love-smitten youth?
What recourse have I against a watcher who never leaves him?
What can I do with a watcher who never leaves him
Wakeful, never overtaken by drowsiness throughout his life.
Awake, whom no cycle of days makes him sleep?
We are seen, and he hears from me all that is uttered
He sees and hears from me everything
By yearning, or all that sorrow reveals.
That youthful folly utters or that passion reveals
I fear him always, and lovers, when
I fear him always, though lovers when
They fear one day, as people say, feel safe afterward.
They fear, as has been said, afterwards feel safe
And often it is said of the watcher, according to
And it has often been said, describing the watcher,
Love's rules: a dog of no value.
By the rules of love, he is a worthless dog
Indeed, I find no wonder in a gazelle watched
Little wonder that a gazelle he watches
By a dog, and ill fortune coupled with this good fortune.
Should be paired with a dog, accursed luck!
What a wretched watcher! He has in every limb
Evil is the watcher! In every limb he has
An eye, and in every body part an ear turned toward us.
An eye, in every member towards us an ear
He says: 'What is it you love about Hasan?'
He says "What is it you love of his beauty?"
So I said: 'His being handsome is enough for you.'
I said "It suffices you that he is beautiful"
Had Time been fair, it would have drawn me near and sent him away;
If fate were fair, it would bring him near and drive it away
But, by the sanctity of love, Time has not been fair.
But, by the right of love, time was not fair
