1. If you two turn aside at al-Liwa, O my two companions, ask

About an abode no lover ever saw and then forgot.

  2. Or if you reach that sanctuary before dawn, stop,

And greet on my behalf a dwelling grown precious and exalted.

  3. O my two companions, and if you glimpse a ruined dwelling,

Then tell that ruined dwelling of my passion.

  4. And draw tears from a dwelling's traces; how often laughter came

From its lips, as its branches bent and swayed.

  5. Who will help me, when my burning heart betrays me,

And my tears pour down whenever I say, 'Hold back'?

  6. How many burning pangs I receive with willing acceptance,

And how often passion called my heart, and I answered, 'Yes'.

  7. And how many a reproacher recited books of blame to

My ears—yet I never knew how he recited them.

  8. Ah, may God preserve the days I gained,

Which fulfilled my hopes for pleasure.

  9. As though treacherous Time had granted them

By oversight; but when it realized, it grew miserly.

  10. In Time's keeping, the age bestowed you; how often

It gave gifts, bestowed favors, and granted blessings in love.

  11. Ah, if only they had burdened my heart with no more than it could bear,

Or had not added to my heart's burden beyond what it revealed.

  12. Or if only they had cared for a lovesick man who cared for none but them:

He loved them, and they squandered his love, leaving it neglected.

  13. O my reproacher, do not go on at length; the heart is absorbed

In longing, heedless of whoever blames or reproaches.

  14. Cease your blame: the sovereign of passion has decreed,

And done whatever he wished under love's law.

  15. And you know that ever since I became enamored of them,

I have no power over passion's turns, nor...

  16. And, my companion in professing love, stop:

For you do not know what happened after I left.

  17. O my masters, I am the ardent lover, patient under

Love's judgment, whether love dealt unjustly or fairly.

  18. Grant my love union—or, if you wish, withhold it;

For, by God, I shall not abandon my love for you.

  19. If my gaze turns away from you, it remains turned

Toward you, and you have narrowed the paths before me.

  20. How can I escape, when you have heightened my passion

For you, and narrowed the paths before me?

  21. I am the lover; if you do not grant a meeting

That heals the heart, do not replace it with aversion.

  22. By the sanctity of my sincere affection in loving you,

And the pleasure of a life sweetened by you for a time, now past,

  23. And by a burning pang—had my eye perceived its first stirrings,

Its tears would not have become a byword for loving you—

  24. I never yielded my soul in love while

Wishing for another after you, O my masters.
