    الشوق طي ضلوعي ليس باللعبِ

    Yearning folded my ribs, it’s not a game

  2. لي في الديار ديارٌ كلما طرفت عيني

    يرف ضياها في دجى هُدبي

    In my home I have homes, whenever my eyes wander

    Their lights sway in the gloom of my affection

  3. وذكرياتُ أحبائي إذا خطرتْ

    احسُّ بالموجِ فوقَ البحرِ يلعب بي

    And when memories of my loved ones come to mind

    I feel the waves playing above the sea with me

  4. شيخ كأن وقار الكون لحيته

    وآخرونَ دماهُمْ كونت نسبي

    An elder whose dignity is the honor of existence

    Others whose blood composed my lineage

  5. وأصدقاء عيون فضلهم مدد

    إن حدثوك حسبت الصوت صوت نبي

    Friends whose generosity continuously flows

    If they speak to you, you'd think it was a prophet's voice

  6. أمي التي وهبتْ حرفي تألقَهُ

    تجئ رحمتها من منبعٍ خصبِ

    My mother who gifted my words their glow

    Her mercy comes from a fertile spring

  7. وإن تغيّبَ في دربِ الحياةِ أبي

    قامت إلى عبئها أيضاً بعبء أبي

    And if my father was absent from life's path

    She also took on his burdens and duties

  8. والناس في وطني شوق يهدهدهم

    كما يهز نسيم قامة القصب

    And the people in my homeland, yearning rocks them

    As the breeze shakes the stalk of wheat

  9. والجار يعشق للجيران من سبب

    وقد يحبهم جدًا بلا سبب

    A neighbor loves his neighbors out of affinity

    And he may love them dearly without a reason

  10. الناس أروع ما فيهم بساطتهم

    لكن معدنهم أغلى من الذهب

    People’s best quality is their simplicity

    But their essence is more precious than gold

  11. عد بي إلى النيل لا تسأل عن التعب

    قلبي يحن حنين الأينق النجب

    Take me back to the Nile, don’t ask about the fatigue

    My heart yearns with the yearning of a graceful gazelle

  12. من كان يحمل مثلي حب موطنه

    يأبى الغياب ولو في الأنجم الشهب

    Whoever carries love of homeland like me

    Refuses absence even in the shooting stars

  13. ثارت جراحي نيراناً يؤججها

    عدو الرياح على قلبي وفي عصبي

    My wounds blazed into fires stoked

    By the enemy against my heart and in my nerves

  14. كنا سماء تبث الخير منهمرًا على البلاد

    كقطر الديمة السكب

    We were a sky that rained goodness on the countries

    Like drops of blood pouring down

  15. وكان موطننا عزًا ومفتخرًا

    ما هان في عمره يوماً لمغتصب

    Our homeland was dignity and pride

    Its day never disgraced by the usurper

  16. وقدوة لشعوب لا تماثلنا

    في الحلم والعلم والأخلاق والأدب

    An exemplar for nations unlike us

    In dreams, knowledge, morals and literature

  17. والكنز كان هو الإنسان مكتملاً

    في محفل الجد لم يهرب ولم يغب

    The treasure was the complete human

    Did not flee or disappear from the circle of determination

  18. والنيل إن فاض أروتنا جداوله

    وإن تراجع جاد النخل بالرطب

    And the Nile, when it overflowed, its streams irrigated us

    When it receded, the palm trees yielded their fruit

  19. والحب أروع ما في الكون نغزله

    خيطاً من الشمس أو قطراً من السحب

    Love is the most wondrous thing in existence we spin

    A thread of sun or a drop from the clouds

  20. والحنبك الفذ في الأشجار لمعته

    ازرت بكل صنوف الكرم والعنب

    The excellent grapevines in the trees, their glow

    I grew with all kinds of generosity and grapes

  21. والناس قاماتهم طالت إذا هتفوا

    بالشمس جيئي تعالي هاهنا اقتربي

    And people's bodies grew tall when they chanted

    To the sun - come, rise up, approach here!

  22. جاءت على خجل حيرى تسائلهم

    من ذا على النيل يا أحباب يهتف بي

    It came shyly, puzzled, asking them

    Who is it on the Nile, my loved ones, calling to me?

  23. ماذا أصاب ضمير الناس في زمن

    صعب كان به داء من الكلب

    What has afflicted people's conscience in a

    Difficult time, with disease from hyenas

  24. هذا زمان غريب كيف نعرفه

    أو كيف يعرفنا من زحمة الحقب

    This is a strange time, how can we know it

    Or how can it know us from the throngs of eras

  25. ارجع الي شباب العمر مؤتزراً

    بالحب والوصل لا بالوعد في الكتب

    Return my youth to me, girded

    With love and reunion, not promises in books

  26. وارفع عن القلب ما يلقاه من عنت

    واغسل عن الوجه لون الحزن والغضب

    Remove what the heart encounters of troubles

    Wash the face of the colors of sadness and anger

  27. فقد أعود كما قد كنت من زمن

    فخر الشباب ورب الفن والأدب

    For I will return as I once was in the time

    Of youth’s pride, the master of art and literature
