There rests the lord of the two Azds—Azd Shanu'ah

and the Azd of Oman—held hostage by a grave at Kazar.

He fought until he died the noblest of deaths,

with a pure white blade, like a lightning flash, keen to sever.

And around the hill, beneath his banner, were struck down

men noble in endeavor, sprung from noble clans.

On the day of encounter Ibn Mikhnaf met his appointed death,

and every stalwart circling him turned his back.

He sent aid, yet no aid was sent him; he died girded and ready

for God—he did not depart clad in a traitor's robes.
