I read your glory in my heart and in books

Damascus, what is glory? You are the eternal glory

When the full moon rises over Barada

I feel your flags fluttering over the blaze

The capital of the world tied here

The resolve of the Umayyads to the resolve of eras

It called and rushed to India and Andalusia

Like a flood of youths with spears and staves

It left its mark on the peaks of history

And taught that glory comes through conquest

Poetry is the condition for glorious conquest, it was improvised

Exalted on heights, aspiring to the highest domes

Victory is hers, nothing more splendid, though

An age of misfortunes threatens her

Victory for the high of head is destined

Sweet as death, if death comes you do not flee

    Damascus, land of glories steeped

In blood the sun pours out in floods

The twenty fifth reminded you of its revolt

That awakening of the world to tremble

Break the iron, your sacred covenants the tribes arose

For the state of the sword, a sword in battle they brought

And left for the people a harsh morrow

A mount like Sinai of the Tablets and triumph

Damascus... the word Damascus shook in my heart

Like the shaking of cedar boughs in the breezes

I placed your love in my sighs and intensified them

I was troubled in sighs, so you were glory in my trouble
