The mind stands bewildered before the steamship;
We seek an answer, but it can return none.
If you wish to put the matter to the test,
Seek knowledge of it by asking an expert.
A ship wheels amid the deep’s surging swell,
While in the depths below it has an operator.
It travels on great wheels,
Fashioned in a rounded form.
It feels no jealousy of Mercury;
It is as though the captive celestial sphere.
It has bequeathed the sun a blush
Whenever its whistle rises.
A moon whose mansions are the seas,
With the star al-Simak as its companion;
Orion is a bracelet in its palm,
And it dazzles the Pleiades whenever it gestures.
Jupiter has attained prosperity,
Yet has become captive to its radiance.
An angel obedient to revelation,
Forever flying upon wings;
A Buraq that journeyed by night across the wastes,
Folding the wilderness as it goes.
A king traveling over rivers,
Whose throne stands upon the seas;
By its might it has humbled them,
Though it is but a little body.
It has won esteem from Khosrow;
Its steam is fragrant ambergris.
An Indian khagan who, for fear of shame,
Is undaunted by the blaze of the inferno;
A volcano of fire whenever it erupts,
Suddenly breaking into a roar.
Or a traveler enamored of journeys,
An envoy upon the world’s affairs;
Or a lover robbed of repose,
Who envies every peacefully resting eye.
In love he has cast off every restraint,
And the tears of his eyes are a stream;
A lovesick one with fire in his entrails,
Longing for the radiant moon.
Or a rogue seeking escape,
To find safety from some grave affair;
Or a hunting falcon swooping down,
Set upon the unsuspecting gazelle;
Or a gazelle of the open plain, quick to bolt,
Running when the general alarm spreads.
Lightning has borrowed its speed,
And gray doves borrow speed from it;
It looks upon the winds with contempt,
For their gusting beside it is paltry.
A noble steed that the radiant stars race,
Only to blush with shame by night along their course;
It folds away both night and day,
And by it the latter age is adorned.
Such a deed cannot be ascribed to a carpenter,
But is the making of an almighty Creator.
In Egypt’s canal it has a beacon,
Rising through the Emir’s inspiration;
Through Ismail’s renown it flew aloft
Across the world, with bounty pouring like rain.
When his justice shone forth,
It rose on the horizon like a famed banner.
This is Aziz, a man of dignity,
And a champion of exalted Egypt;
Of far-reaching hand in building and development,
Distinguished by his abundant works.
For justice he has girded himself;
Success to him—what an excellent minister!
Live, Aziz, brother of victory,
And remain Egypt’s strongest champion.
How many a wall you have raised in glory!
You are indeed worthy of the highest rank.
Vie, for cup after cup of fellowship has gone round,
With the lord of Khawarnaq and al-Sadir.
