1. بَكى أَهلُ مِصرٍ بِالدُموعِ السَواجِمِ

    غَداةَ غَدامِنِها الأَغَرُّ اِبنُ حاتِمِ

    The people of Egypt cried with flowing tears

    The morning its most honourable son Ibn Hatim left

  2. حَلَفتُ يَميناً غَيرَ ذي مَثنَوِيَّةٍ

    يَمينَ اِمرِئٍ آلى بِها غَيرِ آثِمِ

    I swore an oath not lightly taken

    The oath of a man who fulfilled it without sin

  3. لِشَتّانَ ما بَينَ اليَزيدَينِ في النَدى

    يَزيدِ سُلَيمٍ وَالأَغَرَّ اِبنِ حاتِمِ

    What a difference between the two Yazids regarding glory

    Yazid ibn Suleim and the most honourable Ibn Hatim

  4. يَزيدُ سُلَيمٍ سالَمَ المالَ وَالفَتى

    أَخو الأَزدِ لِلأَموالِ غَيرُ مُسالِمِ

    Yazid ibn Suleim spared wealth and men

    While the brother of Azd was unforgiving to wealth

  5. فَهَمُّ الفَتى الأَزدِيِّ إِتلافُ مالِهِ

    وَهَمُّ الفَتى القَيسِيِّ جَمعُ الدَراهِمِ

    The concern of the Azdi man was ruining his wealth

    While the concern of the Qaysi man was gathering dirhams

  6. فَلا يَحسَبِ التَمتامُ أَنّي هَجَوتُهُ

    وَلَكِنَّني فَضَّلتُ أَهلَ المَكارِمِ

    Let not Atmatam think I maligned him

    Rather I preferred the people of virtues

  7. فَيا أَيَّها الساعي الَّذي لَيس مُدرِكاً

    بِمَسعاتِهِ سَعيَ البُحورِ الخَضارِمِ

    O you who strive but cannot attain

    With your efforts the vast, crashing seas

  8. سَعَيتُ وَلَم تُدرِك نَوالَ اِبنِ حاتِمِ

    لِفَكِّ أَسيرٍ وَاِحتِمالِ العَظائِمِ

    I strove but could not attain the feats of Ibn Hatim

    In freeing captives and bearing calamities

  9. كَفاكَ بِناءَ المَكرُماتِ اِبنُ حاتِمٍ

    وَنِمت وَما الأَزدِيُّ عَنها بِنائِمِ

    The building of noble deeds suffices, Ibn Hatim

    While the Azdi remains asleep to them

  10. فَيا اِبنِ اُسَيدٍ لا تُسامِ اِبنَ حاتِمٍ

    فَتَقرَعَ إِن سامَيتَهُ سِنَّ نادِمِ

    O son of a master, do not criticize Ibn Hatim

    Lest you bang your head if you do against regret

  11. هُوَ البَحرُ إِن كَلَّفتَ نَفسَكَ خَوضَهُ

    تَهالَكتَ في آذِيِّهِ المُتَلاطِمِ

    He is a sea - if you venture to cross it

    You will perish in its raging billows

  12. تَمَنَّيتَ مَجداً في سُلَيمِ سَفاهَةً

    أَماني خالٍ أَو أَماني حالِمِ

    You wished for glory in the foolishness of Suleim

    Wishes of a dreamer or wishes of a madman

  13. أَلا إِنَما آلُ المُهَلَّبِ غُرَّةٌ

    وَفي الحَربِ قاداتٌ لَكُم بِالخَزائِمِ

    Beware the Banu Muhalab are but fools

    And in war they bring you disastrous defeats

  14. هُمُ الأُنفُ في الخُرطومِ وَالناسُ َبَعدَهُم

    مَناسِمُ وَالخُرطومُ فَوقَ المَناسِمِ

    They are the nose while the people are behind them

    Dividers while the proboscis is above the dividers

  15. قَضَيتُ لَكُم آلَ المُهَلَّبِ بِالعُلا

    وَتَفضيلُكُم حَقٌّ عَلى كُلِّ حالِمِ

    I have judged for you, O Banu Muhalab, exaltation

    And your preference is a right upon every dreamer

  16. لَكُم شِيَمٌ لَيسَت لِخَلقٍ سِواكُمُ

    سَماحٌ وَصِدقُ البَأسِ عِندَ المَلاحِمِ

    You have a nobility no other people possess

    Magnanimity and true courage in battles

  17. مُهينونَ لِلأَموالِ فيما يَنوبُكُم

    مَناعيشُ دَفّاعونَ عَن كُلِّ جارِمِ

    Degraders of wealth when it comes to you

    Provisions you defend from every aggressor

  18. أبا خالد أنت المنَوَّهُ باسمِهِ

    إذا نزلت بالناس إحدى العظائم

    O Abu Khalid you whose name is praised

    Whenever people face a great calamity

  19. كفيت بني العباس كل عظيمة

    وكنت عن الإسلام خير مزاحم

    You suffice the Abbasids against every hardship

    And were the best protector of Islam
