O dove, convey my greetings
To a beloved I cannot address
And tell her who was angry with us
Why, O calm one, why?
With your estrangement, do you want to break me
When we never sought to break you all
I did not abandon you out of boredom
But I frequented Iraq and Syria
Blame me if I visit you, for my abode
And yours, I see no accord between them
All your family chided me
Blamed me, and I could not bear blame
Noble people before me loved
The noble, and loved nobility
Beautiful, and abundant loved
And passion found a dove
They legislated love before me
And I found no flaw in people for them
So o you, my sight and hearing
The lead of your love ails me
You meant, when you shot my heart
With love's arrow, it has arrows
I scolded my heart about you, but it disobeyed me
And refused in love but determination
If I say, be patient and refrain from her
It refuses anything but retreat from your estrangement
So know my ordeal with you
Rabia then prays and fasts
Love of you settled in my heart
And my love settled in your heart
We are both truthful, burdened
With our companion, and desire no sin
I love her talks, and she loves my proximity
And we only meet for what is proper
If only the day would adorn the night
And the dawn would not end darkness
If only doves were subjugated
To dispatch our messages, o dove
Maybe a dove would lead us
A letter from you we would make imam
And convey the love from a lover
Whose heart loved you, o youth
My sin is not that your love stirred this
If left alone, passion would sleep and slumber
If you saw, one day, a gazelle
Who had journeyed and lowered her veil
Her sash tied to a clearly bending branch
And her veil covered a supple stave
When she smiled, you'd think her mouth
Sparkled, dispelling the darkness
Smooth with a charming, icy brightness
As if she wore musk or wine
The charm did not increase her fragrance
Rather, you gave charm its fragrance
Her rosy cheeks do not notice
Or approach when they hear a groan
More beautiful than you the day you left us
Veiling your face completely in the wrap
Under you a camel ornamented with saddlebags
Competing with you for the reins
All love but mine is nonsense
It flayed the courtyard and bared the bones
