Your beloved’s feast has become familiar to your heart.
Longing has beset you, and you try to fend it off.
But longing has overcome the heart and taken its lead.
Longing overcomes the lover and leads him away.
In Marrar’s house is a gazelle of the church,
Fragrant, wearing his silks and striped cloaks.
A radiant white gazelle, as though, for his beauty,
He were an idol whose worshipped one makes pilgrimage to a church.
His eyes are the eyes of a young gazelle in a thicket,
And he has the neck of a carefully reared antelope.
What would it cost Athma to call on a lover,
Sick at heart and lovestruck, and tend to him?
And give him medicine from her saliva? Perhaps
Such a draught has cured a sick man of his illness.
