وَمَشَيتُ بِاليَدِ قَبلَ رِجلي خطوُها
رَسفُ المُقَيَّدِ تَحتَ صُلبِ أَحدَبِ
And I walked hand-first, before my leg could take its step—
the shuffle of one in fetters beneath a hunchbacked spine.
فَإِذا رَأَيتُ الشَخصَ قُلتُ ثَلاثَةٌ
أَو واحِدٌ وَأَخالُهُ لَم يَقرَبِ
Whenever I saw a figure, I would say, “Three—
or one?”—and think him still far away.
وَقَضى بَنِيَّ الأَمرَ لَم أَشعُر بِهِ
وَإِذا شَهِدتُ أَكونُ كَالمتَغَيِّبِ
My sons settled the matter without my knowing it;
and when I was present, I was like one absent.
