فِدىً لِبَني قَيسٍ وَأَفناءِ مالِكٍ
لَدى الشِسعِ مِن رِجلي إِلى الفَرقِ صاعِدا
In ransom for the tribes of Qays and wealth spent by Malik
From ankle to crown with spear thrusts at Sis'a
غَداةَ أَتى قَومُ الضَريسِ كَأَنَّهم
قَطا الكُدرِ مِن وُدّانَ أَصبَحَ وارِدا
One morn the Folk of Dhiraar came as though they were
Dust storms from Waddan at daybreak arriving
فَلَم أَر جَمعاً كانَ أَكرَمَ غالِباً
وَأَحمى غُلاماً يَومَ ذَلِكَ أَطرَدا
Never saw I a host was more generous in triumph
Or guarded a lad that day more fiercely determined
رَمَيناهُم بِالحُوِّ وَالكُمتِ وَالقَنا
وَبيضٍ خِفافٍ يَختَلينَ السَواعِدا
We pelted them with stones and cudgels and spears
And white blades that slit through the wrist bones
