1. I found her pensive,

    lost in contemplation.

  2. A vision upon her lashes

    bent them as it flitted.

  3. It parted the veil of her dawn—

a leafy grove and a stream—

  4. and surged within her as a shudder,

burning, and a longing sent down.

  5. I called to her, and she turned—

a bosom and freely flowing hair.

  6. And her gaze, in its bewilderment,

    was tear-brimmed and restless.

  7. I embraced her—oh, what fragrance,

    encircling and kissing!

  8. Yet she did not draw back in bewilderment,

    nor did she gaze coquettishly.

  9. Nor did her cheek know

    any change from shame.

  10. As though she, in her purity,

were too pure to feel shame.
