1. ألا عُجَت بالمعِهد المقِفرِ

    تسائِله بالرشا الأحوَرِ

    How strange is the deserted institute,

    When you ask it with fine spray,

  2. عساه يُنبئنا بالخليطِ

    وإن هو عَيَّ ولم يخبرِ

    Maybe it tells us the mixture,

    Even if it is disobedient and does not inform.

  3. عَفا غيَر سُفعٍ به جُثَّمٍ

    جنحنَ على هامدِ أكدَر

    Except for the hoofs of the pure-bred, sturdy,

    Stretching on the neck of the dark-colored one.

  4. وُنؤي تثَلَّم أعضَادُه

    وَأشعثَ قَدْ شُجَّ بالأفَهرِ

    The emaciated one was seen, his bones apparent,

    And the dusty one, his back wounded.

  5. مَقامٌ لبيضاءَ وَهنانةٍ

    مَيودٍ تمايل في العَبقري

    An abode for the white and the alluring,

    The flexible leaning in coquetry.

  6. شَموعٍ لموعٍ فتورٍ القيامِ

    إذا رامت النَّهضَ لم تقدرِ

    Candles for the burning, the cold standing,

    When they try to rise up, they cannot.

  7. لَعوبٍ خلوبٍ تصيدُ الكِرامَ

    وتسبي الحليم فَلم يُبصَرِ

    Playful, flirtatious, hunting the generous,

    And captivating the forbearing without being noticed.

  8. تُرقرقُ عينينِ نجلاوتين

    كأنهما مُقلتيْ جُؤْذرِ

    She blinks two smooth eyes,

    As if they were two black oryxes.

  9. تصُدُّ بسالفَتيْ عَوْهَجٍ

    توجَّسَ رِكزاً ولْم تذْعرِ

    She blocks with her conversation an intense flare,

    That feared striking and did not flee.

  10. لها بَشرٌ ناعمٌ كالحرير

    وَخدْ كجلُنارِها الأحمرِ

    She has a soft complexion like silk,

    And a cheek like its red embers.

  11. وثَغرُ كَممطورِ نَور الأقاح

    تَفتَّق عنْ يَقَقٍ مُزهر

    And a mouth like the rain of the light of buds

    Blooming from a collected bouquet.

  12. كانَّ السُّلافَ وصافي النَّطاف

    ومِسكاً يُضافُ إلى عَنبرِ

    As if the saliva and the clear spittle

    Were musk added to ambergris.

  13. يُعَلُّ بِهِ ثغرُها موهناً

    إذا جُذَع الرِّيقُ في الأثغُرِ

    By it, her mouth is raised affectionately,

    When the saliva flows in the lips.

  14. وخَصرٍ لطيفٍ كمثلِ الجديلِ

    وردْفٍ كدعص النَّقا الأعفرِ

    And a slender waist like a bundle of firewood,

    And a back like the hump of the blond camel.

  15. تَراختْ بأظْعانها نيَّةٌ

    تَزوارُ للأَّحِبِ الأزْورِ

    Her arms sway to the beloved visitor,

    Not once hesitating or stumbling.

  16. وَيهماءَ دهماءَ ديمومةٍ

    كمجرى الغزالةِ لمْ تُغبرِ

    She races the ostrich and imitates the young lamb,

    And folds the mantle of the deserted enclosure.

  17. قطعتُ بأدماء شمْليلةٍ

    جَديليَّةِ العيصِ والعُنصُر

    I passed by the red sands of Shamlila,

    My delicate, fine community.

  18. أمونٍ دَفونٍ جُماليةٍ

    سليلةِ ذي مَيعةٍ أزهرِ

    Protected, buried, beautifully formed,

    Descendant of the most blossoming tribe.

  19. تُلاعب في الوَخْدِ ثنْيِ الزِّمامِ

    وَلمْ تشكُ أيْناً ولمْ تعثَرِ

    She plays with the rein of the camel’s bend,

    Never doubting or going astray.

  20. تُجاري النَّعامَ وَتحكي الجَهامَ

    وتطوي رِدا الخلأ الأقفرِ

    I brought fertile, flowing water,

    To the most verdant and reddish valley.

  21. ومَاءٍ صرىً آجنٍ قد وَردتُ

    بأغضف معتكرٍ أخضرِ

    I cut the homes and planted the good,

    I distributed the livelihood without taking precautions.

  22. ودَوٍ قطعتُ وخيرٍ زرَعتُ

    وعاصٍ وَزعتُ ولمْ أحذرِ

    And an army I defeated and a fortress I demolished,

    And a mile I stood up without it resisting.

  23. وجيشٍ هزمتُ وحصنٍ هدَمت

    وميلٍ أقمتُ ولَمْ يصعَرِ

    And money I gave and a soul I seized,

    And praise I earned without it being denied.

  24. ومالٍ وهبتُ وروحٍ نهبتُ

    وحمدٍ كسبتُ فلمْ ينكرِ

    And horses I shot and a head I hit,

    And people I warred without gaining victory.

  25. وخيلٍ رميتُ ورأسٍ ضربتُ

    وقومٍ حربتُ فلمْ بظفُرِ

    And a barrier I stirred up and a tyrant I captured,

    And a bone I mended without it breaking.

  26. وحيّ أثرتُ وطَاغٍ اسرتُ

    وعظمٍ جبرتُ فلمْ يكسرِ

    I am Al-Qaram, the obeyed king,

    Is there something to boast about my pride?

  27. أنا الملكُ القرْمُ من تُبَّع

    فهل لِفخاريَ من مَفخرِ

    I am the son of kings and the falcon of kings,

    And the master of the kings of the Himyar tribe.

  28. أنا ابن المُلوكِ وصقر المُلوك

    ومولى مُلوكِ بني حمْيَرِ

    So ask the kings of the Yashjub tribe about me,

    And ask the kings of the Al-Asfar tribe.

  29. فَسل بي مُلوكَ بني يشَجُبٍ

    وَساِئلَ مُلوكَ بني الأصفرِ

    Between me and them in pride,

    Is like between pebbles and jewels.

  30. فَبيني وبَيْنهُم في الفَخار

    كبَين الحِجارة والجوْهرِ

    I am skillful with the spear and I quench the thirst of the teeth,

    When the wounds appear and do not heal.

  31. أجيدُ الطِّعان وأروي السنان

    إذا النَّدبُ بانَ ولم يجسُرِ

    And I destroy souls and separate heads,

    Yes, and fortresses without fleeing.

  32. وأفني النُّفوسَ وأفري الرُّؤسَ

    نعمْ والقُنوسَ ولمْ أذعُرِ

    And I protect the guest and grant the beauty,

    And give generously without being stingy.

  33. وأحمي النَّزيلَ وأسدي الجميل

    وأعطي الجزيلَ وَلمْ أقتُرِ

    And I walk with my sword on the day of fighting,

    Like the walk of the strong and steady python.

  34. وأمشي بسيفي يوَم الجلادِ

    كَمشي الخَبنْثَعة المخِدرِ

    When the malicious souls are ferocious,

    And those who do not usually flee flee.

  35. إذا جاشتِ الأنفُس الضَّارياتِ

    وُذّعرَ من كان لمْ يُذْعرِ

    You advanced in the back of the mighty steeds,

    Like the torrent valley of the blond valley.

  36. تقدمتَ في متن صَلب الفُصوص

    كَريق جَموم الجرى أشقرِ

    Smooth pace, beautiful trot,

    Free of irregularities of the Berbers.

  37. صقيل السَّراةِ جميلَ القَطاة

    سليم الشَّظاة من البربرِ

    Short mantle, long decoration,

    Cross of hooves and ostrich feathers.

  38. قَصير الجلال طويل الشَّكال

    صليبِ الحوافرِ والأنُسرِ

    He races the gusts of wind in running,

    Dazzled, almost blinded without going blind.

  39. يُسابقُ في الرُكض عصْف الرِّياح

    فَتبهرُ وَشكاً ولمْ يبْهَرِ

    I am the son of Hood the prophet of God,

    And was born of a purer father.

  40. أنا نجلُ هودٍ نبيّ الإلهِ

    وقدّسَ من والد أطْهرِ

    And we ruled all the kings,

    Without commanding and without hardship.

  41. ونحنُ مَلكنْا جميعَ المُلوكِ

    وَلمْ نأت إمراً ولمْ نعسرِ

    And we struck the heads of the tyrants,

    And the sky was patched with quivering.

  42. وَنحنُ ضربنا رؤس الكُماةِ

    وقدْ بُرقعَ الجَوُّ بِالعَيْثرِ

    And we surpassed the kings of the people,

    To the greatest extent of supreme glory.

  43. وَنحنُ سَبقنا مُلوك الأنام

    إلى غاية الشرفِ الأكبرِ

    And I have the determination of the sword when they fear me,

    And the might of my angry brother.

  44. ولي عزمةُ السَّيف إِذ يرهبون

    وبأسُ أخي الزّأرةِ المُضْجرِ

    And a strike that makes the striker forget the ice,

    And a stab that sheds the blood of the chest.

  45. وضربٌ ينسي الجليدَ الضراَب

    وَطعنٌ يريقُ دَمَ الأصدر

    I am the horseman under the loud roaring,

    When the ram bleats and does not show patience.

  46. أنا فارسُ الخيل تحت العجاجِ

    إذا الكبشُ خامَ ولم يصبرِ

    And I am more generous in status than Hatim,

    And braver in war than Antarah.

  47. وأكرمُ في المحل من حاتمٍ

    وأشجعُ في الحربِ منْ عنترِ

    And I am more skilled than the rider of ships,

    And faster to prepare an army.

  48. وأفرسُ من راكب الصَّافنات

    وأقدمُ ساطٍ على عسكرِ

    And holder of the souls of all the tyrants,

    On a day hot on the people.

  49. وقابضُ أرواح كلَّ الكُماة

    بيومٍ على النَّاس مُستَسعِرِ

    So ask me about the fighting, clamor and gazelle,

    With the horses and most equipment.

  50. فسَل بي القَنا والوغى والظُّبي

    مَع الخيل والعَدد الأكبرِ

    And the day I invaded Oman and indeed

    Saw me there without granting victory.

  51. ويوم غَزوتُ عُمان وقَدْ

    رأتْ أنَّني ثَمَّ لمْ أنْصَرِ

    And that the Omnipotent has abandoned me,

    And I am unable over the kingdom.

  52. وأنَّ المُهيمن لي خاذلٌ

    وأني على المُلك لمْ أقدِر

    That is a false assumption and some assumptions

    Are sins that are uncovered and unforgiven.

  53. وذلك ظنُّ وبعضُ الظنُّون

    ذنوبٌ تتُاح فَلمْ تُغْفَرِ

    And they had come in groups marching,

    Like the battalions in white and red.

  54. وَقدْ أقبَلوا زُمراً يزحفُون

    كتاِئب بالبيضِ والسَّمهري

    And they wore impenetrable armors,

    Over fast, overbearing, vanity-clad horses.

  55. وقدْ لَبِسوا مُحكَمات الدُّروع

    على سُبَّقٍ شُزَّبِ ضُمَّرِ

    And the prey retreated from the Arabs ,

    And the bows roared from Qidr.

  56. وأحجمتِ الصَّيدُ من يعرُبٍ

    وهَللَّت الشُّوسُ منْ قيدرِ

    And the thrown pebbles remained like locusts

    Accumulating over the blond gazelle.

  57. وظلَّ حصى القذف مثل الجرادِ

    تراكمَ فَوق النَّقا الأعفَرِ

    And the speech of the eloquent speaker became

    Like the mumblings of the mute and the blind.

  58. وصار كلاُم فصيح اللسِّان

    كغَمْغمِة الأخرسِ والأوقرِ

    So I attacked with the audacity of a lion in its den,

    Against the reddish donkeys, scared and fleeing.

  59. فأقدمتُ إقدامَ ليثِ العرين

    على عانة الحُمُرِ النُّفَّرِ

    So they fled like ostrich floods

    From the courageous and mighty python.

  60. ففَرَّت فرار شِلال النَّعامِ

    عن الضَّيغَم الباسلِ القَسور

    So when the allies deserted,

    Abandoning loyalty without supporting.

  61. فحَينَ تردَّتْ رداء البوارِ

    وفاءتَ بذلٍ ولمْ تنُصرِ

    And I distinguished between the empty boaster,

    And the treacherous, fine spray.

  62. وأفرق بين الَهزبر الهَصورِ

    وبين الرَّشا الخاذل الأحور

    I forgave and that is an attribute of mine,

    And I sheathed my sword from the escapee.

  63. عفوتُ وذلك لي شيمةٌ

    وأغمدت سيفي عن المُدبرِ

    And I kept for praise being the tyrant,

    While no one else there was mentioned.

  64. وأحرزتُ للحمدِ كونَ الكُماة

    وغيري هنُالك لْم يُذكرِ

    And the best of earth’s kings is a ruler

    Who when empowered forgives.

  65. وخير مُلوك الورَى مالكٌ

    إذا نال مقدرةً يغفِرِ
