1. نبأ له تَصلى القلوبُ وتخشعُ

    وتفيض بالعَبرِ الجفونَ وتَهْمَعُ

    News that makes hearts pray and be humble,

    And eyes overflow with tears and weep,

  2. نبأ تكادُ الأرض ترجف عنده

    وتكاد ثَمَّ جبالها تتصدَّعُ

    News that almost makes the earth tremble,

    And its mountains nearly split and crack.

  3. نبأ له طَفقَ الملوكُ بُغمَّةٍ

    حيراءً تلهف ليلها وتفجَّعُ

    News that made kings worried,

    Restless at night, tossing and turning.

  4. أحسامُ أوصبَ هَمُّ يومكَ خاطري

    والهمُّ يخطر بالقلوبِ فيلذعُ

    The grief of your day has troubled my thoughts,

    And grief stings hearts so they ache.

  5. أحسامُ أوجعني رَداكَ ولم أكن

    قِدماً ليُوجعني مَصابٌ موجعُ

    Your loss has pained me though before this

    No agony could make me ache.

  6. أحسامُ عَزَّ عليَّ فقدكَ من أخٍ

    عَفِ الشَّمائلِ جوده ما يُقلعُ

    I found it hard to lose you, O brother

    Of noble traits whose generosity knew no bounds.

  7. للهِ أنتَ رَبيبَ تختٍ أرْوَعاً

    قِدْماً نماه ربيبُ تختٍ أروعُ

    To God you were the finest ever reared

    In past times in the finest, noblest of abodes.

  8. سحقاً ليومكَ كم أراقَ وكم شَجا

    دمعاً وقلباً قبله لا يجزعَ

    Damn the day you left, how many it made weep

    And weep their hearts out in anguish.

  9. ما خِلت أن الطودَ يُحمل قبل ذا

    حتى يمرَّ عليَّ نعشك يُرفعُ

    I thought the bier would never pass me by

    Until your coffin passed carried on high.

  10. لا كانَ يومكَ يا ابن أُمّ فإنه

    يوم أمَرُّ من الحمام وأفجعُ

    Far from auspicious was your day, O son

    Of Tubba, dire and full of woe.

  11. لهفي عليكَ كلهفِ جيلٍ أصبحوا

    تجتاحُهم نُوب الزمانِ وتقرعُ

    I yearn for you as a generation that finds

    Time’s misfortunes batter them down.

  12. لهفي عليكَ كلهفِ ضيف طارق

    ألفى مُناخكَ وهو صِفر بَلْقَعُ

    I yearn for you as a guest come in dark

    To a well-known abode finding all changed.

  13. لهفي عليكَ كلهفِ راجٍ أصبحت

    آماله بكَ وهي حَسرِي ظلَّعُ

    I yearn for you as one hopeful but fate

    Has dashed his hopes and left him disappointed.

  14. لهفي عليكَ كلهفِ حيَّ لم يقُم

    فيهم يضُّرك ما ذهبتَ وينفعُ

    I yearn for you as the living who gained

    Nothing from your loss, nor were they harmed.

  15. لهفي عليكَ كلهفِ أُمٍ بَرَّةٍ

    فقدت جنيناً فهي ثكلى تنزعُ

    I yearn for you as a doting mother

    Who lost her baby and is left inconsolable.

  16. لهفي عليكَ كلهِفِ طفلٍ قطعّت

    منه العلائقُ فهو باكٍ يفجَعُ

    I yearn for you as a child severed

    From kin who now weeps, forlorn.

  17. لهفي عليك كلهفِ خيلٍ أصبحت

    آذانُها لمصابِها بكَ تجدعُ

    I yearn for you as horses whose ears

    Are slit as a sign of their grieving for you.

  18. ضَعضعتنا أسفاً عليكَ ولم نكن

    لولا رَدَاكَ لنكبةٍ نتضعضعُ

    Your loss has left us broken though we were not

    Before your going given to breaking down.

  19. إن أمسِ مأثوماً بقتلكَ إنني

    بكَ يا ابنَ سيّدِ يعربٍ لمُفَجَّعُ

    Oh my brother, you have drained my tears that now

    Flow free down my cheeks as I weep and wail.

  20. قطعت يدي عمداً يدي وتوهمي

    من قبل انَّ يداً يداً لا تَقطعُ

    Alone you left me then left me to weep

    For you by every grave dug in the earth.

  21. لا يُبعدنكَ الله ربكَ راحلاً

    أضحى لنيَّةِ ذاهبٍ لا يرجعُ

    How long I stayed by your tomb weeping

    Though that cannot help you, O Tubba’s son.

  22. ولعاً بجدّكَ من جَوَادٍ عاثرٍ

    جَد الزمانِ له عَثور يَظلعُ

    How long I paused, praying and reciting

    Though the dead sense naught, nor hear what we say.

  23. لما أتاحَ لك الإله منَّية

    فإذا المنيةُ أقبلت لا تُدفعُ

    To save you from death’s grip, my clan

    Dear princely son, I would give all I own.

  24. ولقد تقود الصافناتِ شَوازبا

    قُباً تَناقل في الشكيم وتَمزعُ

    Your sword cut down foes, now it lies

    Still, harming none, its edge gone.

  25. ولقد تجود بما ملكت وما اغتدى

    شَادٍ بمدحك في المحافلِ يِصدعُ

    God spared me the blow though death

    Loomed, its stroke warded off and held back.

  26. حَسَّنْت تأتينَ المصاقعِ مثل ما

    حسنتُ مدحاً فيك كان يُرَّصعُ

    May God reward you with gardens and bliss

    For His grace and your Lord’s succor suffices.

  27. أأخي أذْلتَ مَصونَ دمعي فانبرى

    يطأُ الخدودَ إذا يجود ويَهْمَعُ

    For as long as wild doves mourn, I will weep

    For a comrade ne’er to be replaced or matched.

  28. أوحدتني وذهبتَ ثم تركتني

    أبكي لفقدكَ كلَّ قبرٍ يوضعُ

    Tell the base cowards that I will retaliate

    With keenest blades, my resolve is unshakeable.

  29. كم قد ظللت على ضريحكَ باكياً

    لو أن ذلكَ يا ابنَ تُبعَ ينفعُ

    Is there one like my brother among you

    Whose might my sword cut down in his prime?

  30. ولكم وقفت مسلمّاً ومكلماً

    لو كان يعقل ميتٌ أو يسمعُ

    So I warn all tribes of what will come

    From me, a sharp unsheathed blade that slashes.

  31. تفديكَ من حَدَثِ المنيةِ أُسرتي

    يا ابنَ الملوكِ وكلُّ مالٍ أجمعُ

    Leave off your pride, fear my wrath, fear a man

    Whose blade all valiant warriors dread and fear.

  32. قد كان سيفكَ قبل يومك قاطعاً

    فغدَا بيومكَ نائباً لا يقطعُ

    To me you and your women are the same,

    Yours may be braver, more gallant and bold.

  33. أحفظتني لفظاً أتيحَ منيَّةَ

    خطرت ولم يك ثمَّ عنها مدفعُ

    You will be like sheep, dazed, set upon,

    With white swords unsheathed, bared and exposed.

  34. فاللهُ يجزيكَ الجِنانَ مثوبةً

    منه ورَبَّكَ فهو نعمَ المفَزَعُ

    Like locusts taking off, scattered apart

    By searing flames in a raging inferno.

  35. فلأبكينَّك ما استحنَّ لإلفهِ

    إلف وما غدت الحمائمُ تسجَعُ

    Forevermore will the days grind you down

    In never ending turmoil and grief.

  36. أبلغْ بَني اللُّؤماءِ أن مهنَّدي

    أمضى السيوفِ وأن عزمي أقطعُ

    I will raise up clouds of vengeance

    Pregnant with torrents of hissing, searing rain,

  37. هل فيكم كأخي لديَّ جَلالةً

    وهو الذي أضحى بسيفي مُصرعُ

    My resolve is to spare none nor any

    Fortress stand that I will not raze.

  38. فأنا النذيرُ لكلِّ قومٍ بعدها

    مني بفاقرةٍ تَسُحُّ وتهمعُ

    How can you sleep secure when here are

    White swords athirst, and famished birds of prey,

  39. فذروا التعاظمَ واتّقوا مني فتى

    كل الكماةِ له تذِل وتخضعُ

    Horsemen like lions, fiercely attacking,

    Who never retreat, nor flinch, nor hesitate,

  40. لا فرقَ بينكم وبين نسائكم

    عندي وهنَّ لديَّ منكم أشجعُ

    And spears whose keen heads thirst

    Like the tower’s peak flashing in the sun,

  41. وكأنني بكمُ وقد جاءَتكمُ

    والبيضُ تلمعُ والأسنَّة شُرَّعُ

    And steeds swift to charge like wolves

    That mass if their pack scents blood.

  42. كنعاجٍ توضحَ شَدَّ فيها ضَيغمٌ

    فغدت نَوَافر شَتُّها لا يجمعُ

    Kings are above commoners for God

    Made them rulers, as He willed, just like Tubba.

  43. أو كالجَرادِ علا ففرَّق شمله

    في ظلّ مُدْجَنةٍ حريقٌ زعزعُ

    We are people of heavenly waters and Dhu Tuwa,

    Hood the prophet our carpenter and wellspring.

  44. فلأنقلنَّ إلى الطغاةِ رَحى رَدىً

    أبداً يدور بها الزمانُ المفجعُ

    And we, when dark clouds deny their rain, have

    Gifts galore that heal, benefit and enrich.

  45. ولأنشئَنَ غمائماً من نقمةٍ

    جُوناً ووابلها الذُّعاف المُنْقعُ

    God elevated us high above the stars

    For He raises and lowers whom He will.

  46. ثَهمي فأَيةُ لينةٍ لم تنقعر

    لهم وأية قلعةٍ لا تقلِعُ

  47. كيفَ التذاذى بالرُّقاد وها هنا

    بيضٌ معطَّشة وطيرُ جُوَّعُ

  48. وفوارسُ كأسود بيشة في الوغى

    لا تنثني رَهَباً ولا تتكعكعُ

  49. وقَناً خَواطرُ كلها خَطيَّةٌ

    فيها سِنانُ كالمنارةِ يلمعُ

  50. وسَوابق قُبُّ البطونِ كأنها

    إن ثارَ عيثرها الذئابُ الهُرَّعُ

  51. شرفُ الملوكِ على العبادِ لأنهم

    قوم أبَاحهم الممالكَ تُبَّعُ

  52. قومي بنو ماءِ السماءِ ودَوحتي

    هُودُ النبيُّ نجارها والمَنبعُ

  53. ولنا إذا ضَنَّ الغَمامُ مواهب

    محمودة تشفي اللَّهاةَ وتنفعُ

  54. رفع الإلهُ على النجومِ محلنا

    واللهُ يخفض من يشاء ويرفعُ
