1. كم دونَ راية من ذي جَفجفٍ جلدٍ

    ومن سخاويّ أقياف ومن عُقدِ

    How many under the banner of one with rough skin

    And generous companions and knots

  2. وبلدةٍ كمَمرّ الشمسِ طامسةٍ

    تَيهاءَ تذعر قُلبَ الباسلِ النَّجدِ

    And a land where the sun sets, darkened

    Lost, making the heart of the brave Najd tremble

  3. شطَّت برايةَ عنا طيَّةٌ قِدَدٌ

    زَوراء توهي قوى المهرية الأجُدِ

    A blessed banner was raised for us, a strong one

    False, bewildering the Amalekite forces, unyielding

  4. بيضاءُ كالشمسٍ مِعطارٌ خَدلجّة

    رَيَّا الروادفِ لم تحمل ولم تلدِ

    White like the sun, scented, smooth

    A flag whose poles did not carry or give birth

  5. رَادُ الوشاحين ملءُ الدِّرعِ بهكنةٌ

    أذكتْ بقلبي نارَ الشوقِ والكمدِ

    The chests of the armored men filled with valor

    Igniting in my heart the fire of longing and yearning

  6. برَّاقةُ الجيد خَودٌ طفلةٌ جمعتْ

    ما في الغزالةِ من حسنٍ ومن غيَدٍ

    The brightness of her cheek, the face of a young girl

    Who gathered all the beauty and charm of a gazelle

  7. كأن ريقتها والفجرُ منصدعٌ

    ماء الغَمامِ جرى رِفقاً على بَرَد

    As if her saliva and the dawn were cracked open

    The rainwater of clouds flowed gently over ice

  8. أو قَرقَفٌ من سُلافِ الخمر قد مزجت

    بذائبِ الثلجِ في الكاساتِ والشُّهد

    Or it was the foam of wine mixed

    With melted ice in cups and with nectar

  9. كم أقصلت بسيوف الغنج من بطلٍ

    ساط وكم نفثت بالسحرٍ من عقد

    How many heroes I killed with swords in battle

    And how many knots I undid with magic

  10. أقوت منازلها عصراً وغيرها

    كر الأشدين من محلٍ ومن أمد

    I strengthened her dwellings at times and others

    I frequented the valiant gathering places

  11. لم يبق فيها مغير البين من إرمٍ

    غير القليب وغير النوي والوتد

    Nothing remained in them of a deceptive foe

    Except pegs, plowshares, and tent poles

  12. وغير سفعٍ يحاميمٍ جنحن على

    مستكهبٍ كإهاب الذئب ملتبد

    And except a howling wolf, wings folded

    Over a kindler, like the howling of a hyena

  13. يا دمنةً أذهب التفريق بهجتها

    عنها وما كل من لهوٍ بها ودد

    O Damna, remove the joy of separation from her

    And not everyone who wants her, loves her

  14. سقى عراصك بل حياك منبعق

    بماء يسفح إسفاحاً بلا نكد

    Water your camels, yes, your life, from a source

    That flows copiously without fatigue

  15. يكسو رباك وإن بانت معالمها

    وشياً تبيد الليالي وهو لم يبد

    That covers your dwellings, even if their features fade

    A love that nights ruin but it is not ruined

  16. إيها وعد وسل الهم مدرعاً

    ثوب الغياهب وأنف الهم بالسهد

    Come, fulfill the promise, and carry the worry

    Wearing the garment of darkness, leading the worry to forgetfulness

  17. بحرة من بنات الفحل ذعلبةٍ

    عيرانةٍ عنتريسٍ جسرةٍ أجد

    A sea of she-camels from the stallion's progeny

    Agile, energetic, fleet

  18. غلباء تهب غول البيد قادرة

    كما تشقق أسمال الملابيد

    Victorious, bringing down the calamities of fate

    As mountain passes crack and split

  19. ترمي المروت إذا ما أظهرت وطفا

    آل الظهور بعيني ناشطٍ فرد

    They cast spears when their flanks appear

    At the eyes of an active, solo horseman

  20. أقب أزهر مثل السيف منشرحٍ

    مستوحشٍ لهذم الروقين ذو جدد

    Nearer in shape to a sword, open, unsheathed

    Wild, with this firmly-rooted stock

  21. كأن رحلي بذات الإثل شد على

    أعلى طريقة فحل العانة الوحد

    As if my camel litter was tied atop

    The highest saddle of a superior stallion

  22. جأبٍ رباعٍ أقب لابطن صهصلق

    مكدم أخدري أحقبٍ عتيد

    Sturdy, square-built, bulging belly

    Hard-hoofed, fast, prepared

  23. يُزجي أْتاناً توَّخاها بآلتهِ

    لحمل فاشتملت منه على ولدِ

    It makes the mares, which he selected with his tool, carry

    And they conceived his offspring

  24. فظلَّ يكدمُها حالاً وتركله

    حالاً ويرفعها بالشلّ والطَّردِ

    He kept tiring them sometimes and kicking them

  25. حتى إذا وَافيا والحرُّ متَّقدٌ

    في شامسٍ قمطريرٍ عابسٍ وَقدِ

    Until when they arrived, and the heat was blazing

    In a hot, sweltering, frowning sun, flaming

  26. على مُطحلبةٍ ينشقُ طحلبُها

    عن أزرقٍ غير ضحضاحٍ ولا ثمدِ

    At a salt marsh, whose salt was cracking

    Revealing blue, neither muddy nor still

  27. مَسجورةٍ سُترت بالغابِ جِمَّتُها

    تفترُّ عن جدولٍ كالسيفِ مُطَّردِ

    Cooked, covered by trees, its multitude

    Bubbling from a stream, like an unsheathed sword

  28. فخضخضا بُردهُ خوضاً فراعهما

    ركز تثوَّرَ من ذي أسهمٍ جَردِ

    They both snorted heavily, frightened

    Tearing the ground in panic, skinning the monster violently

  29. فاخر وّطا ينسفان الأرض من فزع

    نسفاً وينتهبان الغولَ بالجَلدِ

    Was that him or a talkative, raven-black hyena

    With drooping ears, fur matted and tangled?

  30. أذاكَ أم خاضبٌ حُمشٌ شوَامته

    هجنَّعٌ أصلمُ الأذُنينِ ذو رَبَدِ

    He made it neglect its eggs one day as he incubated them

    While it was busy with drowsiness and hunting

  31. ألهاهَ عن بيضهِ يوماً وأفُرخه

    تَقطافه ثمرَ التَّنومِ والقَصَدِ

    Until the white one threw her claws

    Into an infidel's chest, devoid of hope and firmness

  32. حتى إذا ألقت البيضاءُ أنملهُا

    في كافرٍ ريعَ من أمل ومن صردِ

    So it hurried back, chasing the eggs

    And the rain of calamities came from the lion

  33. فارفَدَّ مطَّرداً للبيضِ ساهكةً

    جاءتْ بوابل شؤبوبٍ من الأسدِ

    Like a slave with a grey mane, frightened by

    A sheep bleating between blue and tanned leather

  34. كالعبدِ ذي الفروةِ الرَّبداءِ اقلقه

    شاءٌ ذواهبُ بين الزُّرق فالجُردِ

    As if it were a shepherd's shelter, propped up

    With ropes and tent poles

  35. كأنه بيتُ راعي سُلَّةٍ سَمِقٍ

    أو هودجٍ حفَّ بالأنماطِ والنَّجَدِ
