1. لولا طلابي للعُلى

    وسموُّ نفسي للفضائلْ

    Were it not for my students reaching for glory,

    And my soul aspiring to virtues,

  2. ما كنتُ أوَّل نازلٍ

    بين الفيَالقِِ والجحافلْ

    I would not have been the first to descend

    Amongst the armies and crowds,

  3. والمشرفيَّاتِ الصوار

    مِ والَّلهازمِ والقبائلْ

    With the towering fortresses,

    And the camps and tribes,

  4. والموتُ يُبدى ناجذَيْ

    هِ إذا تشاجرت الذَّوابلْ

    And death baring its fangs

    When the swords clash.

  5. ولقد فني مالي الجزي

    لُ على الوسائلِ والسوائلْ

    I spent all my money

    On the means and expenses,

  6. بذَّرتُ مالي في الثَّنا

    والحمدِ قِدماً غيرَ نافلْ

    I scattered my money in praise,

    Gratefully, not superfluously.

  7. ما كلُّ هاوٍ للجمي

    لِ وللثناءِ سوايَ فاعلْ

    Not every impassioned praiser,

    And eulogizer can equate.

  8. ولطالما خُضتُ الحرو

    بَ وطالما أغنيتُ عائلْ

    Many a times I fought wars,

    And many a times I enriched families,

  9. ولطالما رضُتُ العزي

    زَ فصارَ تحت الذَّل ناصِلْ

    Many a times I accepted honor,

    That later turned into disgrace.

  10. ولطالما قُدتُ الجيا

    دَ لشاعر بثناءِ قائلْ

    Many a times I led armies,

    Eulogizing a praising poet.

  11. فسل الأسنَّةَ والأعنَّ

    ةَ والعمائرَ والقبائلْ

    Ask the tribes and clans,

    About my morals and manners,

  12. عن شيمتي وخَليقتي

    إن كنتَ عن ذا الفخرِ سائلْ

    If you inquire about this pride.

    I am the ink of war, when the virtuous clash,

  13. أنا ضَيْغمُ الحربِ العَوا

    ن إذا تصادمتِ الأفاضلْ

    And I am the orator of the eloquent, when they gather.

    I am prepared for every profound address,

  14. وأنا خطيبُ أولي البُلا

    غِة إنْ ترامت في المحافلْ

    With its afflictions and burdens.

    I am the one called when the brave falter,

  15. وأنا المُعَدُّ لكلَّ خَطْ

    بٍ فادحٍ ببَلاهُ نازلْ

    I am the sword, the helper and lodger.

    I am the king, son of a king,

  16. وأنا الذي يُكنّى إذا

    هالَ الكُماة هناك هائلْ

    Compared to their similar monarchs.

    I am the praised and master of the Hashemites,

  17. وأنا المُسائفُ والمُداعِسُ

    والمُساورُ والمُنازلْ

    When their tall kings are mentioned.

    Who dare contend, take pride, lavish or argue?

  18. وأنا المليكُ ابنُ الملي

    كِ إلى مُلوكهمُ الأماثلْ

    I plunge into war like a hissing serpent,

    A coated lion with lofty shoulders.

  19. وأنا الهُمامُ التُّبَّ

    عيُّ وسيَّدُ الأزْدِ الحُلاحلْ

    I have prepared him to meet the champions,

    Gushing, narrating, and withering.

  20. وأنا سُليمانُ المعظَّ

    مُ في ملوكهم الأطاولْ

    Supple and towering, bones like joints.

    So I was prevented the day of frenzy,

  21. مَن ذا يُطاولُ أو يُفا

    خِرُ أو يُباذخُ أو يُساجلْ

    To see safety and optional prayers.

    He marched against me to receive death, O marcher!

  22. ولقد يخوضُ بي العَجًا

    جَ أقبُّ كالسِّرْحانِ صاهلْ

    And I am the warner to mankind,

    When calamities hurry.

  23. مُتلاحكٌ ذو مَيْعَةٍ

    متمطّرٌ سامي الكواهلْ

    They were snarling like faces,

    Similar savages like charging lions.

  24. أعددتُهُ للِقا الكُما

    ةِ مُفاضةً سَرداً وذابلْ

    They charge in a group with clamor,

    Like howling cats, a roaring torrent.

  25. ومُهنَّداً يفَري العظا

    مَ وهنَّ معه كالمفاصلْ

    Each bearing a cleaver,

    Like a fierce lion.

  26. فتوقَّني يومَ الهيِا

    جِ ترى السلامةَ والنّوافلْ

  27. وابرزُ إليَّ منازِلاً

    تلقَ المنيَّة يا مُنازلْ

  28. وأنا النذيرُ إلى الوَرى

    مني إذا سرْنَ الطَّوائلْ

  29. إذْ هُنَّ كالحةُ الوُجو

    هِ سواهمٌ مثلُ العَواسلْ

  30. يركضنَ سِرْباً للوغى

    كقَطا ندى قرفين ناهلْ

  31. يحملنَ كلَّ غَشَمْشَمٍ

    ذي نجدةٍ كاللَّيثِ باسلْ
