1. صرفتَ بالاً عن سُكي

    نةَ هاجراً وسَلوْتَ هندا

    You have averted disaster from me

    And migrated as an outsider to India

  2. ولويتَ عن أمّ الرَّبا

    بِ سَوالفاً بدّلت صَّدا

    And avoided the mother of disarray

    With night-talk that changed reproach

  3. أعَرَاكَ زهدٌ في الِحسا

    نِ وِلم نَخلك ُمنحت زُهدا

    Has asceticism made you uncaring

    Or why does natural disposition make you ascetic?

  4. كم مالكٍ ملكَ الرّقا

    ب غدا وراحَ لهنَّ عبدا

    Many a wealthy man has been mastered by gold

    And in the morning become slaves to it

  5. يأمرنه فيطيعُهُ

    نَّ ولا يحلُّ لهنَّ عِقدا

    They command him and he obeys them

    And they are not allowed to tie a knot for him

  6. لولا ذَكرت كما ذكر

    تُ عشيَّةَ الجَفرينِ دّعدا

    If you had not reminded me as you reminded me

    In the evening of the two encampments, Dudd

  7. وسُكينة تُصمي القُلو

    بَ إذا جلَت وجهاً وخدَّا

    And of Sukayna whose heart

    Was silenced when she smiled softly

  8. بيضاءٌ باكرَها النع

    يمُ فأشرقَت عجزاً ونُهدا

    White in the morning, blessed with bounty

    So she shone, unable and bosomed

  9. كالفَرقدِ الأحوى الأغرّ إذا

    لرْبرَبهِ تبدَّى

    Like the cut Ahoo bud when

    Its dew is revealed by the starry rain

  10. تفترُّ عن كالأقْحَوا

    ن سقاهُ نوءُ النجم رَعدا

    And if kissed, it smells

    Of rare musk and soft scent

  11. وتشُمُّ إن قبَّلتها

    مسكاً وغاليةً وندَّا

    And when the noonday heat smites it

    It is given spikenard and mead to drink

  12. وإذا ترشفها الضَّجي

    عُ سقته إسفنطاً وُشهدا

    And the son of him who enriched nobility came

    And prepared for enemies a reckoning

  13. وأتا ابنُ مَن أغنى العُفا

    ةَ وعدَّ للأعداء عدَّا

    The most righteous of kings, most virtuous

    And their strongest foe and contender

  14. أزكى الملوكِ أرومةً

    واجلُّهم خالاً وجدا

    I have not betrayed a covenant since I grew up

    Nor have I failed to keep a promise

  15. ما خُنتُ عهداً مُذ نشأ

    تُ ولم أكن أخلفتُ وَعدا

    I prepared feasts for guests

    And poured forth meat and broth

  16. أعددتُ للأضيافِ دُهم

    اً دفَّقت لحماً وثَردا

    And steeds for the brave

    When the reward of poetry is retaliation

  17. وصوِاهلاً للماجدينَ

    إذا جزاءُ الشّعر عُدا

    And round leather shields I furnished

    Lining them with circulated coins

  18. وبُدورِ تِبرٍ ضمّنِت

    اتلفُتها نقداً فنقدا

    And for everyone stubborn, I readied

    A sword to suit you, excellent in metal

  19. ولكلّ ذي رُغمٍ ألدَّ

    إذا أتى أمراً وإدَّا

    Whether you have seen it alone

    Wrath, when you strike with it

  20. سيفاً يروقُكَ جوهراً

    إمَّا بُصرت به وحدَّا

    It almost restrains your hands from striking

    Existing, with it I reaped the necks

  21. عَضباً متى تضرب بهِ

    فيقل ليكفُفْ قدْكَ وقدّا

    When the battle was provoked into harvest

    And polished, lofty in making

  22. كائن حصدتُ به الرقا

    بَ إذا استطارَ النَّقعُ حصدا

    The breadth of chests collapse

    Seeking from us the ropes of steel

  23. ومطهَّماً سامي التلي

    لِ أقبَّ رَحب الصدرِ نهدا

    When play turned serious

    When I plunged into the surge of its billows

  24. سائِل بنا حبلَ الحدي

    د غداة صارَ الهزلُ جدا

    And returned the fore of horses in avoidance

    And made myself a shield before them

  25. إذا خُضْتُ موج خِضَمّهِا

    ورَددتُ أُولى الخيل ردا

    On the day of turmoil, protection and obstruction

    Like the lion roused by the roar

  26. وجعلتُ نفسي دونهم

    يومَ الوغى رِدْءاً وسدا

    In his den, so he snarled

    O Lord of a skull I made

  27. كالليثِ هيَّجه المُهْج

    هجُ في عرينتهِ فشدَّا

    A sheath for the stabbing blade

    And how much I gave away in gifts

  28. يا رُب جمجُمةٍ جعل

    تُ لصارمِ غِمدا

    That I may gain glory through them

    And when the weak pleads to me

  29. ولكم بذلتُ مواهبا

    كيما احوزَ بهن حمدا

    You would see me comply and give way

    The Arab has sent parables

  30. وإذا دَعاني المُستثي

    بُ رأيتَ لي عَنقاً وشدا

    That speak to me, untying knots

    Poverty that causes minds to bow down

  31. قد أرسل العربيُّ أمثا

    لاً يحلن لديَّ عِقدا

    When they pass by its gifts

    Beauty lies not in garments

  32. فِقرا تخرُّ لها العُقُو

    لُ إذا مَرَرْنَ بهن هدا

    So realize, even if cloaked in fur

    Beauty is noble deeds

  33. ليس الجمالُ بمئزرٍ

    فاعلمْ وإن رُدِّيتَ بُردا

    And feats that bequeathed glory

  34. إن الجمال مَكارمٌ

    ومآثرٌ أوَرَّثْنَ مجدا
