نَعم ساوَرَ الهمُّ الفؤاد فأبْهَرا

ولجَّ به البَين المشتُّ فأسْهرَا

Yes, worry has clouded my heart, so it became blind,

And separation has settled upon it, so it became sleepless.

وبانَ الذي ألوى بقلبك حبُّه

أتصبرُ أم لم تأنِ أن تتصبَّرا

And the one whose love has twisted your heart,

Can you have patience or have you not prepared to show resilience?

علقتُ فتاةً كالوَذيلةِ كاعباً

بَرْهرَهةَ ريَّا الروادف عبَهرا

I fell for a girl like a fawn, playing,

A pure white doe, with a musky fragrance.

من القاصراتِ الطرفِ غنَّاءَ غادَةً

يُطيّبُ ريَّاها النَّصيفَ المُعصفرا

She is a singing gazelle among the short-glanced beauties,

Her meadow is scented by the soft summer breeze.

إذا نظرت شاهدتَ بالرّملِ فَرقداً

أو التفتت عاَينت ريماً مُذَّعرا

If you look, you see her resting on the sands,

Or if you turn, you find a frightened deer.

لها بشرٌ لو باشرَ الوردُ بعضَه

بناعمةٍ بلْهَ الرياضَ لأثَّرا

She has a face, if roses competed with some of it

With tenderness, it would scent the gardens thoroughly.

ووجهُ إذا ما قابلتْ وهي سافرٌ

به الشمسَ خَلِناهُ من الشمسِ أنورا

And her face when she unveils meeting the sun

Makes us think it outshines the sun in brightness.

وجيٌد كجيدِ العوهجِ الخاذِل انتحت

جبالَ الغَضى ترعى عَراراً ونوفَرا

She has a neck like the bending stem of a lotus,

Shepherding the mountains of coyness, strolling and roaming.

ونَهد كُحقِّ العاجِ أملسَ ناعمٍ

حَصَانٌ به صاك العبيرُ فعفَّرا

And a breast like solid ivory, smooth and delicate,

A studded casket which musk has scented.

وصدرٌ منير كالسَّجنجَل مشرق

ثَنا لونه الجادِيُّ بالنَّضْح أصفرا

And a shining chest like carnelian, gleaming,

Its hue turned yellow by the dripping dew.

وترخي على المَتنينِ أسحَمَ فِاحماً

غدائره يحملنَ مِسكاً وعنبرا

She struts on her two mounts, swaying proudly,

Her tresses carry musk and ambergris.

وتبسِمُ عن حُمّ المراكزِ نُصَّع

عذابِ يحاكين الأقاح المنوَّرا

And she smiles from the wine of virginity intoxicated,

Tormenting like the shining stars.

وما قهوة صَهباءُ صرفٌ مِزاجها

مَعينٌ زُلالُ اللون ليس بأكدرا

Her coffee brown is pure, its flavor

A spring, blue in color, not turbid.

ونَشْرُ يلَنجوجٍ يُعَلُّ بعنبرٍ

يخالطُ مِسكاً في الزجاجةِ أذفرا

The scattering of her musky hair, scented with amber,

Mixed with musk in the vial, most fragrant,

بأطيبَ من فيها سُحيراً إذا هفَت

نجومُ الدجى بالغربِ والليلُ أدبرا

Is sweeter than the twilight stars when they set in the west,

And the night turns away.

لهوتُ بها في خَفض عيشٍ ولذةٍ

وما خلتُ ذاك الدهر أن يتغَّيرا

I sported with her in lowly life and pleasure,

And that time never ceased to change.

ولمَّا تنادَوا للرحيل وقرَّبوا

أيانقَ يحملنَ السّجِافَ المخدَّرا

When they called for departure and prepared

The sedans adorned with curtains.

وقد رَاعني بالأمس أسحمُ ناعِبٌ

غدا ناعقاً فازددتُ منه تطيُّرا

Yesterday, her swaying camel made me anxious,

Today, neighing, so I am filled with more worry,

ولمَّا رأيتُ البيَن قد جَدَّ جدُّه

وأني مُقيمُ الرحل مع من تعذَّرا

And when I saw the separation had become serious,

While I remain encamped with those left behind.

بكيتُ بكاءً لو بكي صخرُ تدمُرٍ

كمعشارِه عوَّلتُ أن يتدَّمرا

I cried such tears, if Tadmor's rock cried like them,

Like its chisels I wished it would crumble.

فدعْ ذا وسلِ الهمَّ عنكَ ببازلٍ

وسوجٍ إذا اليومُ المؤجّجُ هَّجرا

So leave this, and wash away the worry with a cup

Of wine when the flaming day departs.

من الشَّعْشَعاناتِ الحَراجيج تامكٍ

قمطرٍ إذا عرَّضته الوخد جَرجرا

Of the gleaming goblets of Tameeq and Qimtar

When offered, ring with a tinkle.

عليهِ فتىّ من آلِ كهلانَ ماجد

حوى سودَد أضخماً وعزاً ومفخرا

On it is a noble youth from the tribe of Kahlans, glorious,

Who has upheld might and honor and pride.

سليلُ ملوكٍ من عَرانينِ يَعربٍ

بها ليلَ كسرى قد أذَلُّوا وقيصرا

A descendant of kings from the Arabs of Ya'rab,

By them Khusrow's throne was abased and Caesar's.

هو المُنزلُ الأعداءِ من بعدِ عزَّهم

منازلَ لا يرضى بها الضَّبُ مَجحرا

He who humbles enemies after their glory,

To positions which even hyenas spurn.

هو المُلْبِسُ الليثَ المُهابُ زَئيره

نسيجين من ذلّ ٍرداءً ومِئزرا

Who clothes the formidable lion in two garments -

A coat of mail and a waist wrapper.

هو القائدُ الجُرد الخَناذيذَ للعِدَى

قواحل شُعثاً كالسَّراحين ضَّمرا

The leader who charges the enemy with brave horsemen,

Disheveled like the image of lions gaunt.

صَدوعٌ بعزمٍ ثاقبٍ وبهّمةٍ

ورأيٍ يُريهُ مُضْمَرَ الغيبِ مُظهَرا

With resolute purpose, penetrating wisdom

And insight that shows him the unseen folds.

ألم ترَ أن اللهَ أعطاهُ سورةً

وعزاً على كل الملوك مُؤزَّرَا

Do you not see that God granted him a chapter

And glory over all honored kings?

نماهُ إلى العلياءِ عمرٌ وعامرٌ

فبوركَ عيصاً لا يُشَابُ ومَفْخَرا

Umar and Uthman raised him to nobility,

So blessed be a lineage pure and proud!

أولئكَ أربابُ الخلافةِ والعُلى

وأشرفُ من قد حازَ أمراً وأمَّرَا

They are the lords of the caliphate and the eminent,

And the noblest of those who gained authority and ruled.

فمن يكُ عنا أيها الناُس سَائلاً

فإنا ملوكُ الناسِ من آلِ حِمْيَرا

So who, O people, shall ask us,

For we are the kings of men from the tribe of donkeys!

حَللنا مَقاماً تقصُر الشُّهبُ دونه

ونرجو على ما دونه الشَّهبُ مظهرا

We have attained a status beyond which meteors fall short,

And we hope for what is beyond it meteors will shine.
