1. أمُعوِّجٌ أم أنت غيرُ مُعوّج

    بِنتَ الجَديل بدار ذات الدُّملجِ

    Are you crooked or are you straight, not crooked?

    O daughter of the barren, in the house with hanging garlands

  2. إنْ لمْ تكن لكَ نيَّةٌ في عوجةٍ

    برسومها فادْلجْ فلَستُ بُمدلجِ

    If you have no intention of being crooked

    Then be straightforward, for I am not to be fooled

  3. نهجي كنهجكَ إن وقَفتَ مُسلماً

    فإذا أبيت فليس نهجكَ منهجي

    My path is like yours, if you stand as a Muslim

    But if you refuse, then your path is not my path

  4. سّلمْ على طلَل الحبيبِ ولا تكُنْ

    حلف الصَّبابةِ كالخليِّ المُثلجِ

    Greet the ruins of the beloved and do not be

    Like the oaths of youth, like frozen butter

  5. أقوى وأقفر غيرَ سُفعٍ جُثَّمٍ

    هِجن الهُمومَ واورقِ ومُشجَّجِ

    Stronger and more desolate, not coarse or crude

    Bearer of sorrows, leafy and interwoven

  6. أنكَرتُه لولا شَذى بِترابِه

    يحكي فتيت العَنبر المُتأرّجِ

    I would not have recognized him were it not

    For the scent of his dust that tells of perfumed ambergris

  7. ولَقد دَعا فأجابهُ لمَّا دّعا

    دمعٌ كمنصَلت الخليج المُخلجِ

    He called and tears answered his call

    Like the tears of the gulf, turbulent

  8. ظلَّت به صحبي قياماً جُردُهمْ

    قُبّاً حنينَ اليَعْملاتِ الوُسَّجِ

    My companions kept vigil over him, their necks bared

    Like the howling camels, adorned

  9. من كلَّ سلهبةٍ وأسوق سلَهب

    أو كلَّ ذِعلبة وذعلبَ أعوج

    From every rough terrain and winding path

    Or every dune and crooked dune

  10. دَارٌ لَصامتهِ السْوارِ خَريدةٍ

    خمصانة رَّيا الرَّوادف ضمَعجِ

    A house whose panels lament

    Like the cooing of doves and the crying of ostriches

  11. خَودٍ بَرهرهةٍ شَموع رودةٍ

    كالشَمس إلا أنَّها لمْ تخرج

    With cheeks like flowers, candles shining

    Like the sun but it has not risen

  12. إذ تَسْتبيك بمعصمٍ وبساعد

    وبمرفق ضخمِ أجمَّ مُدَّمجِ

    As you flirt with a wrist, forearm

    And bulky elbow, completely covered

  13. وبفاحمٍ كالَّليلِ مُنسدلٍ على

    وجهٍ كغرةٍ صبحهِ المُتبلجِ

    And a gaping darkness spreads over

    A face like the dawn, snow-covered

  14. ومُؤشّرٍ ألمى المراكِز واضحٍ

    يقِقٍ كنُوار الأقاحِ مُفلَّجِ

    And fingertips that hurt as they touch

    Delicate like the light of candles, opened

  15. وكأنما جِريالُ عانةَ شَعشَعتْ

    في صحنِها بزُلالِ ماءِ الحشْرجِ

    As if the braids of cAnah were gleaming

    With the moisture of water from Husharj

  16. خُلطت بمسحوق العبيرِ وعلَّلتْ

    بذكيِّ نافِجةٍ ونَشر يَلنجَج

    Mixed with fragrant powder and scented

    With musky perfume and scattering of Jasmine

  17. عَلَّتْ بهِ بعدَ الكَرى أنيابها

    فَذهبنَ بعد تضوُّعٍ وتأرُّج

    She showed her teeth after some time

    So they were dazzling white after being covered

  18. فتَّانةٌ تَرنو بِعَيني فَرقدِ

    وَلها إذا التفتت تلفتُ عَوهجِ

    A seducer glancing with sleepy eyes

    When she turns, I turn, feverish

  19. ما ظبيةٌ من أدم حيرة مُطفلِ

    ترنو لأتلَعَ عاطفٍ كالدَّملجِ

    Not a gazelle with graceful neck

    Seeking the feelings of one infatuated like me

  20. تنتَاشُ غُصنَ الضَّال في مَوليَّةٍ

    ميثاء حُفَّ بعرفجٍ وبعوَسج

    Roaming the stray branch in an orchard

    Serene, surrounded by aromatic plants and grasses

  21. يوماً بأحسنَ مُقلةً ومقَّلداً

    منها وَلا أبهى هُناك وابهج

    One day in the most beautiful place, adorned

    With nothing lovelier than it, more brilliant

  22. دعْ ذا وقضّ لُبانتيك بعَرمسٍ

    وجناءَ ناجيةٍ أمونٍ نْيزجِ

    Leave this and fulfill my wishes with a poem

    Of intimate whispers, protected and delicate

  23. حَرفٍ هَجنّعةٍ دِفاقٍ رَسْلةٍ

    مهما تُعرِّضْها التنائفُ تمعجِ

    Words of a throaty voice, a message

    Flowing no matter how circumstances change

  24. وكأنَّ رْحلي والقرابَ وَنمرقي

    بسراة مخضُوبِ الظَّناببِ أخرجِ

    As if my saddle, flask, and spear

    Were dyed with the blood of enemies in battle

  25. تْترى لَها صَعْلاءُ كلَّفها النَّجا

    لفِراخ قيْضٍ بالدَّماث مشحّجِ

    You see it has straps, tanned to perfection

    For the nestlings of hawks in blood stained ruins

  26. أفذَاك أم شببٌ أقبُّ مُسفّعٌ

    شخْتُ القوائم ربُّ رَوقٍ أعوجِ

    Is this it or is it a striped hyena, feet bound

    I walked on hands, Lord of gentle sand dunes

  27. باتتْ عليهِ ليلةٌ بمدَلّج

    غدقٍ فبات مبيت سَارٍ مُدَلجِ

    The night stayed over it in a shelter

    So it spent the night sleeping soundly

  28. حَّتى إذا ما الفجر أشرقَ وانجلتْ

    تلكَ الغَياهبُ بالصَّباح الأبلجِ

    Until dawn shone and those dark clouds

    Disappeared with the clear morning

  29. وافاهُ قنَّاصٌ مشومٌ سَاغبٌ

    خلَقُ السَّرابلِ صامت لم يهرجِ

    A grim hunter came, eager

    With smooth legs, silent without shouting

  30. يَسعى بغُضفٍ كالأمَاعطِ ضمَّرٍ

    قُبٍ كوالحَ ضاريات وُسَّجٍ

    He went after it like a swarm of locusts

    Necks like Indian swords, adorned

  31. فتبعنُه سبعاً كأنَّ صفاِتها

    نبلٌ تَتابعَ عن رهيش مُدججِ

    As if their swords were arrows following

    The feathers of an arrow, armed

  32. فانصاعَ يطعنُ ناشطاً صفَحاتها

    بشَباةِ مسلوب السِّنان مُضرّج

    He lunged stabbing its sides

    With a spear, smooth blade bloodstained

  33. حتى إذا غودرْنَ بينَ مُجدَّلٍ

    ومُهلَلِ ناجٍ وبَينَ مُبعَّجِ

    Until when it fell between interwoven

    Valleys and sand dunes

  34. وليَّ يشوب عسيجَةُ بوَسيجِةِ

    أعتقْ بذلكَ من وسوجٍ معسج

    And so it was freed from entanglement
