1. يا هل رَأيتَ بين فَيدٍ فاللّوى

    ظَمائناً تجزعُ أعراصَ الِلوَى

    O beauty, seen between the rugged rocks

    A delicate gazelle frightened in fright

  2. عَقائلاً من يَعرُبٍ عَطابِلاً

    عَرَانجاً لصَنا بألحَاظِ المهَا

    With a herd of elegant, pure-bred Arabian horses

    Adorned with bracelets glancing askance

  3. مِن كُلِّ جمَّاء الحُجوم بَضَّةٍ

    صَامِتِة الخِلخالِ غَرثاء الحَشا

    Each a dark-eyed beauty with silent anklets

    Disheveled hair in the thickets wandering

  4. دُرّية الثغر مُنيرٌ صَلتُها

    عَذبةُ سلسَالِ الثغُور والسَّلمى

    With bright smiles and sweet refreshing lips

    Like the full moon rising over the dunes

  5. كأنها بدرُ تمامٍ قد عَلا

    على كثيبٍ أصلدٍ على نقا

    The night and dawn became, from her light

    Jealous - the radiance of dawn and gloom of night

  6. فالليَّلُ والصُّبحُ المنيرُ أصبَحا

    مِنَهَا حسودَيْ ضَوء صبحٍ ودُجى

    With a fold of her gown she hid from me

    A swift gazelle outrunning the dawn’s first light

  7. ونَفْنفٍ مَرتٍ طوت بي ثوبهَا

    حُرجُوجةٌ تسبِقُ ظِلماَن الفَلا

    Shy yet bold, tender yet fierce

    Elusive as the shy oryx trailing her sight

  8. حَرفٌ ذمولٌ حرَّةٌ عيرانةٌ

    مَوَّارةُ الضَّبع أمُونٌ في السُّرى

    As if I were above a filled valley

    As cool as a house with its first fire lit

  9. كأننَّي فَوقَ ظَلِيمٍ مُفعَمٍ

    أربدَ مثلِ البيتِ ممشوقِ الشَّوى

    Or a stallion stamping restlessly

    Swift, his neck outstretched trotting in might

  10. أو لَهقٍ فردٍ شَبُوبٍ ناشطٍ

    مُطرَّد الرّوقين مَدموم الصَّلا

    I sensed a threat, turned to see it, and saw

    Mingled with the dusk, ghosts of fright

  11. مُستَوِحشٍ أوجس رِكزاً فانثنى

    يَخلُط بالمِلع أفانينَ الوَجى

    Urged by the evening's last calls

    And a screech owl stirring the thickets at night

  12. يحدُوهُ زحَّافُ العَشي شَاحذٌ

    وَحَرجفٌ يجتثُّ أشجارَ الرُّبى

    Stayed as a guest, though harsh was his bed

    His hot coals between rocks his bedding that night

  13. فباتَ ضيفاً لغضاهُ فحمُهُ

    تَخللَّت حرَّ رُكام في ثَرى

    Amongst prickly thorns and desert brush

    Deafened by the insects' cries at first light

  14. بَين أريكٍ فَرُجامٍ فَصرَا

    فعجمَة الرَّمثِ فجمهورِ الغضا

    Dug with his hands, broke off branches

    Of trees, stripped naked by the gloaming night

  15. يحفرُ بالروقِ يُريقُ أفرعاً

    مِمَّا عَرَاهُ من تهاويل الدُّجى

    Until the darkness lifted and faded away

    At dawn, he rose, as fate had decreed his plight

  16. حتّى إذا انجابَ الظَّلامُ وانجَلى

    باكَرهُ ثمَّ بمحتُوم القَضَا

    Tearing through the hills, raced on

    With his trusted companions, accustomed to flight

  17. مُخّرّقُ الأطَمارِ طاوٍ قد عداَ

    بِضُمَّرٍ أنيسهُا طُولُ الطُّوّى

    Of straight builds, tied with ropes, gaunt

    Their mouths like the fierce mouths that bite

  18. شَوازبٍ قُودٍ ضَوَارٍ قُحَّلٍ

    فوهٍ يُضاهينَ سرَاحينَ الغضَا

    They broke into a panicked run behind him

    He turned to face them, stones and dust in flight

  19. فَانصلتَتْ تمعجُّ مَعجا خلفَهَ

    وانصَبَّ يكسُوهنَّ نقعاً وهبَا

    When fate allowed him to reach them

    He stabbed with a thrust like lightning bright

  20. حَّتى إذا أمكَنها منهُ القضا

    أوزَعها طَعناً كتخريق الدِّلا

    Then he remained still, watching them

    As the survivors escaped in panicked flight

  21. فَظَلَّ بين مُجلخِدٍ جاثمٍ

    وهاربٍ سَّلمهُ فرُط النَّجا

    Until his command prevailed over them

    And they lay dead between the living and lifeless

  22. حَّتى إذا أنفَذ فيها حُكمَهُ

    وغودرَتْ بين صريعٍ ولَقا

    On he went, gathering speed, leaning forward in his saddle

    Galloping, slicing through the emptiness of the night

  23. وَليَّ مُحِثا مُصْمعِدَّاً مُعنِقاً

    مُنْتَصباً يقطعُ أجواز الفلاَ

    With a roaring like thunder, whenever

    The weapons of war weakened in their strike

  24. وَمُهجِرٍ سِربالُه الآلُ إذا

    تراكمَ الآلُ هجيراً وطغا

    Bearing me is one with excellent character

    Who charges into fray woven tightly

  25. مَطَا علافَيا على شمليِله

    ألوى بها الملعُ ففَاضت كالغضا

    Long neck, ears pricked forward, marked

    By the well-formed body and graceful sight

  26. نازعتهُ خمرة سُبلِ لم تزلْ

    مُسكرةً لكنَّها لا تحتَسى

    Like a wild gazelle freed, his galloping

    Is the sound of rain on the meadows at first light

  27. أنا ابن ذي التَّاج المِليك نُبَّعٍ

    وصفوة المختَارِ هود المصطفى

    Swifter than an arrow, no, swifter than the wind

    Brighter than lightning when lightning gives light

  28. من دوحة هُوُد النبيّ أصلُها

    وفرعُها في شرفٍ ماءُ السَّماء

    In my right hand, a polished sword

    White like salt, its blade shimmering bright

  29. أني أنا الأبريزُ أصلاً وعُلىً

    والنَّاسُ صُفرٌ بالدقيق يُشترى

    Determination sheathed in its silence

    If it touched a boulder, the boulder would split

  30. أنا ذُعار الخيل إن مجَّ القَنا

    دَماً وسمُّ الخصم يوماً إن عتَا

    I wore a coat of mail like no other

    Gleaming like the sun at dawn’s first light

  31. إذا طغى الفقرُ وكفِّي لم يزَل

    فيها لداء الفقر والعُدمِ دَوا

    Made by David, blessings on him, its links

    Repel spears and arrows in might

  32. ماليَ مبذولٌ لِكلّ طالبٍ

    والَعِرضُ مِنّي لم يُدنّسِه الطَّحا

    Coated with a lethal poison, one taste

    Would fell even the most stubborn in fight

  33. أنا عتيقُ الطير قلباً في الوغىَ

    والضَّيغمُ الوردُ إذا التفَّ القنا

    If it sparks, you would think it

    Raging fire or the sun at midday bright

  34. أقدمُ من شهم عَلى الهَوْل إذا

    فَرَّعنِ الموْتِ الشّجاعُ وانثنى

    A noble man of refined manners disputed me for it

    Praiseworthy of character, refined politeness

  35. أنا ربيعُ النَّاسِ في عَامِ القَسَا

    وكعبةُ الوفد إذا ضنَّ الحَيَا

    I pierced his coat of mail like piercing

    Candle flames, with my sword's point alight

  36. أنا المجَّلي في الفخار والعُلىَ

    وكلُّ ملك حيثُ ما سرتُ وَرا

    He said, as he took off his coat of mail

    My soul is yours today, my life is your right

  37. كالبحر أهدى للقريب جوهراً

    جوداً وأهدى لأخي البُعد الغُثا

    Of all the kings possessed, I attained

    And all the living are but fleeting flight

  38. كالطَّوْدِ حِلماً والسّماكِ رتُبةً

    والسَّيف عزماً إن له القرنَ انتصى

    Of no use to man are his riches

    Save what he gives in righteous deeds for right

  39. كالدَّهر نفعاً لِصديقٍ قد بَنا

    بهِ مطا الدَّهر وضراً لِلعدا

    All who live will perish one day

    Save the Owner of the Throne and deeds of merit and praise

  40. أنا أخو الفضل وينبوعُ النَّدا

    ومعدنُ الصّدق لعَمري والوفَا

    Whoever is guided by truth as a vessel

    And entrusts his affairs to The Eternal Might

  41. ففي يَميني للوَرى وَيُسرتي

    بحرانِ جاشا من مَنونٍ ومنُى

    Whoever makes reason his riding beast

    Will be cast into the depths of tombs into the night

  42. ونائلي يَفضحُ جيحونَ ندًى

    وسطوتي تُذعرُ آسادَ الشَّرَى

    Whoever seeks the counsel of the unwise will stray

    And will attain nothing of his hopes but denial and blight

  43. وعَزمتي تُربي على الشُّهبِ مَضا

    وِهمتي تنطح عِرنينَ السُّهَا

    Who has crossed forty springs of his life

    Yet deviates not from his purpose is led aright

  44. لو طَلبَ الموتُ نزالي في الوغى

    جَدلته بالمُرهفِ الماضي الشَّبَا

    I have composed wisdom none doubts

    Except the ignorant man in his plight

  45. مَلأتُ أقطارَ البلادِ نائلاً

    وسطوة ترهبُ مرّيخَ السَّما

    If it passed by the lips of wise ibn Duraid

    He would not say but that it was eloquent recite

  46. منَاقبي فوق النُّجومِ كثرةً

    وَشيمتي الصَدقُ وتجزيل اللّها

    O lovely gazelle, most comparable to the belle

    Grazing between the stony hills and out of sight

  47. وأَغْتدي بِضرم نيرانِ القرَى

    فوق التّلِاع الشُّم ليلاً والرُّبىَ

  48. وإن تمَّنى ذو رجاً أمْنيَّةً

    أعطيتُهُ فوقَ رجاهُ والمُنى

  49. وطَارقٍ جَشَّمهُ نيلُ المُنى

    جَوْبَ الدَّياميم إذا الليلُ عَسَا

  50. رفعتُ ناري فَاهتدى بِضوِئها

    فنالَ عندي مَااشتَهاهُ وارتَجى

  51. وقَد أشُبُّ جاحمُ الحَرب إذا

    هَانَ لَظى الحربِ لأمرٍ وَخبَا

  52. يَحِملْني مُطَهَّمٌ ذُو مَيعة

    أقبُّ طَاوي الكَشحِ محبوك القَرا

  53. مُجَملَحُ الخلقِ طَويلٌ كرْدُهُ

    مُؤلَّلُ الأُذنين معروق الشَّوى

  54. نَهدٌ أسيلُ أعَوْجيٌ زَانَهُ

    تَلاَحكُ الجسمِ وتحنيبُ المَطا

  55. كالطّود طَيَّار العِنان وقعُهُ

    في ركضهِ وقعُ الصَّفا على الصَّفا

  56. كالسَّهم بل كالرَّيح لاَ بلَ دونَهُ

    في مرهِّ البَرقُ إذا البرقُ أضَا

  57. وَفي يميني مُرهفٌ ذُو رَونق

    أبيضُ كالمِلحةِ مفتُوقُ الشَّبَا

  58. مُصمّمٌ عَضبٌ خفيٌ كِلمُهُ

    لَوْ باشرَ الصَّخرَ براهُ وَفرَا

  59. وقَدْ لَبستُ نَثْرة مُفاضةً

    مبُيضَّة كأنَّها مَتنُ الأضَا

  60. مِن صنُع دَاودَ النَّبيِّ سَردُهُ

    يفلُّ أطراَف الرِّماحِ والظُّبى

  61. وَمُرَّةِ الطَّعم عُقارٍ قَرقف

    لو ذاقَها الطَّودُ الأشمُّ لا نتَشى

  62. إن هُرقت في صخبها حَسِبتها

    نار غضاً تأججُ أو شمس الَضُّحى

  63. نَازعنيهَا مَاجدٌ ذُو نخوَة

    مُهذّبُ الأخلاق محموُد الاخا

  64. وخدر ذاتِ دملجٍ دخلْتهُ

    على شمُوع رَودةِ مِثل الرَّشا

  65. تقول إذ جردَّتْها من درعِها

    نفسي لكِ اليومَ وما حُزتُ الفِدَا

  66. منْ كلّ ما نَالَ المُلوكُ نلتُهُ

    وكلُّ حيّ للحُتوف والتّوى

  67. واَلمرءٌ لاَ ينفَعُهُ منْ مَالِه

    إلاَّ الَّذي قدَّمَ في سُبل الهُدى

  68. وكلُّ ذِي عيشِ سَيَفنى ما خَلا

    ذا العرش والفعلَ الجميل والثَّنَا

  69. مَنْ أخذَ الصّدقَ له سَفينةً

    وفوَّضَ الأمرَ لذي الطَّول نجَا

  70. من جَعَلَ الأفكَ له مطيَّةً

    ألقَتهُ في قعرِ الحتُوفِ والثَّرى

  71. من استشار غيرَ ذي العَقلِ هَوى

    ولم ينلْ مِنْ قصدِه غيرَ العنَا

  72. مَنْ خاضَ عَشْرَ الأربعينَ عمُرُهُ

    ولَم يزغ عن غيّةِ فَقد غَوى

  73. وقد نظمْتُ بلَ بقيتُ حكمَةً

    ما شكَّ فيها ذو حجىً ولا اقتوى

  74. لو عرَّجَت بابن دُرَيدٍ لم يقل

    وهو الحليم الألمعيُّ المُفتَتا

  75. يا ظبيةً أشبَه شيءٍ بالمَها

    راتِعةً بين السَّدير فاللّوِى
